Oil pick-up filter

Hi!

I've just removed my sump and as I'd suspected there was the milky goo that comes with a tired head gasket.. I will remove the heads next week, but first I want to put the sump back. As I'm there anyway, does anyone have any tricks to clean the pickup filter? On all filters going to ship's engines(mdo, hfo) we just use gasoil and compressed air but I don't think that's the way to go here.. Does anyone have any ideas? I haven't removed it and I rather won't.

Other than the white milky crap the colour of the sump was a bronze/brownish colour, so that's good! I haven't noticed the headgasket failure before, but then again, I haven't drove her for more than a kilometer the past 6 months.

Kind regards,
Andries

Can't really tell as the car is only in my ownership since last September. Does condensation lead to that big of an amount of milky goo? I know that the climate is moist but.. Ah, I don't know! There as small drip of coolant on the joint between the block and the cylinderhead on the left cylinderbank. As I haven't removed my inlet manifold yet I can't if the same problem has occured on the inside. I will replace the headgaskets anyway, probably have the heads skimmed and see if there's anything else that needs attention. Engine ran fine though, smoothh! :D

Two methods to clean the pick up, one would be to degrease as best as possible then to run over the gauze gently with a blow torch until the debris is burnt away ( quite tedious)
The better way would be to find someone who has a ultrasonic cleaner. Very effective.
I see clogged up pick up's more and more, especially on VAG. Usually we replace them as precaution and for the time element.
Hope this is of some help

Thanks! Really solid advice, worked a charm as long as the blow torch was on the minimum setting.
