Oil Pressure

Right, the 3.9 is pretty much ready to be fired up, having fitted the p6 timing cover but not sure if I have circulation of oil. I have packed the oil pump gears with petrolium jelly and cranked her over with plugs removed. I assume the only way of telling is if oil reaches the rocker gear which it isnt. Is there a better way of priming the pump? Dont really want to take timing cover off again as I have used 2 gaskets already!

sounds like you want a tool to put on the end of your electric drill that fits into the oil pump drive through the hole where your distributor normally does the same job. You can get them ready made - from rimmers for instance, or make something up to do the same job!

Rich.

Thanks Rich, that makes sense. Didnt know such tool existed but yes Rimmers do sell them. Found one on ebay too so bidding on that at the moment. Will know in about a week if its done the job. Cheers Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Easy enough to make one up...

I certainly would begrudge giving Rimmers that amount of cash for something that won't get used too often! :D

Spin the pump about 1000 rpm and you'll feel the resistance as the oil picks up...should then see oil seeping from the rockers. And/or a spotter in the car will see the gauge coming up.

Good Luck!

Stan, quite like the brass inserts you have in your vice. Did you make them or buy them?

That certainly looks simple enough, thanks, the picture helps. It isnt really a cheap tool with vat and carriage!! Im going to lock myself in the garage for a bit.

OK...I know tantus pedis on here is on the force...but he doesn't seem to have been around for a while...so I can confess...

A relic from my apprentice days that seem to have gravitated to my vice...

...in fact, the vice as well! (Or...should that be vise? Was never sure about that....or maybe I've got enough vices so a vise doesn't count. :) )

The UK spelling is "V I C E", i.e. Vice,

but the US spelling is "V I S E", i.e Vise.

That's strange, it's V I C E in Miami

Typical Quattro! Oh yes, I can remember watching that series where Crockett and Tubbs go around Miami looking for people using dodgy mechanical screw apparatus used for holding or clamping work pieces... :p

That "VICE" in Miami is the naughty-naughty type associated with red light bulbs and swinging purses under lamp-posts!

Subject drift at its best!
Imagine someone that starts to read because he wants to find out about oil pressure in a V8 and ends up reading the above.
I think that this forum offers a very wide span of information in a superb entertaining manner.

Good news. I suppose it would have hardly been worth making one if it only cost you £10  .
