Oil Pump - High Volume upgrade

Anyone fitted one of these, did it make a difference ?

Anything I would need to be aware of when fitting ?

Oil Pump Gears

This will uprate the pump up to SD1 spec, which is higher volume, but unless it has a modified oil pressure relief valve spring included,or a spacer for it, it will not give higher pressure. As for fitting it will just need to be primed up before starting by packing with vaseline on assembly.

My friend with the BGT V8 dragster fitted this.
Initially he had a sticking pressure relief valve.
He was quite suprised to see 70psi on the guage.
I think it sits at about 45 now he has sorted out the spring.
Well worth the money.

They can weap a bit after that conversion despite how accurate you are with a drill...the extra internal plate just doubles the chances of leaks but is quite effective in its application.

Anything that puts the oil flow volume up is a GOOD IDEA.

Pressure is not too important, within reason. The design of the bearings traps oil between the bearing surfaces at a huge pressure. The sole function of the oil pump generated pressure is to get the oil to travel round the engine to get within reach of the bearings - it's nowhere near enough to force the oil into the working area of the bearing. If you think about what you see in the bearings, the oil feed holes are on the low pressure side of the bearing, away from where the bearing is being loaded. That's why oil viscosity is important - if the oil wasn't "treackly" the rotation of the bearing wouldn't drag it into the working area.

Flow is good news because it helps to dissipate heat away from the bearings and pistons - hence oil coolers.

When you have an old ###ed engine, the cause of very low oil pressure is that the bearings have developed excessive clearance and the oil is spilling out of the side of the bearing faster than the pump can supply it (and sometimes before the rotation of the bearing can drag it into the working area!).

I did this conversion by fitting the later sd1 cover since the kit was no longer avaialble.

With SD1, you need to modify the end of the disributor, quite easy to do but once done, there is no return.
