Hello Gareth,

Why do you wish to remove your oil pump? Does your engine have next to no oil pressure?

Ron.

well i have been having problems with the timming and i have found out its the distribtor and also found outs its the sd1 and so it the oil pump and i only got the p6's parts and the sd1 and p6 pump are different end of the drive of the distrobor are different so thats y i want to replace it

Hello Gareth,

Sorry, but I am not quite sure I understand? Are you going to replace the distributor and oil pump with SD1 items? If so, you will need an SD1 timing cover too. Which timing cover do you have fitted?

Ron.

i have the sd1 timming cover on mine but i got the p6 distrutbor which i had to mod to fit the sd1 oil pump but i want to put the p6 oil pump on there instead of the sd1

Hello Gareth,

As your engine is fitted with an SD1 timing cover, the oil pump gears are the tall gears, not the short P6 gears. In which case, you cannot use P6 gears. You can swap the distributor over for a different distributor provided it has the wobbly drive fitted to engage with the oil pump gears.

Which oil pump front cover are you using? Is it a P6 or SD1 item?

Ron.

well the timming chain is the p6 but got the sd1 timming cover with the hole unite of the oil pump i thought i could take the distritbtor out and the oil pump off with the gears and change it all over for the p6

No that won't work Gareth. The P6 gears are too short to run inside an SD1 timing cover. If you want to run P6 oil pump gears, which are less efficient that the SD1 oil pump gears, you will need to remove the SD1 timing cover and fit an entire P6 timing cover with P6 oil pump gears. You can fit an uprated oil pump into a P6 timing cover which consist of taller oil pump gears, but you will need to install a spacer plate so the front cover can be fitted to the timing cover. If you do this, then the wobby drive is not fitted to the distributor.

If the distributor is causing problems, then best to replace it by itself.

Ron.

so wot is the difference between the sd1 and p6 timming cover then as they look the same

P6 has shallow oil pump gears, a hole for the mechanical fuel pump and a rope front seal, the SD1 has deeper (higher volume) oil pump gears (with a different drive from the dizzy) no hole for the petrol pump, and a lip front seal.

right now i got u well the engine is a p6 and got the sd1 timming cover in there with the p6 distribtor abd with the sd1 oil pump and gears all i want to do it change the pump over back to the p6 and the gears cant not see y the p6 cant fit the sd1 timming cover

The SD1 oil pump gear is a different shape Gareth - it won't fit.

The one on the left is the P6 version and the one on the right is the SD1 - not to scale but just to show the difference.
