from what iv read everyone seems to upgrade the oil pump in there p6 because the original isn't of a very good standard. what pump is it and where do you get it from and how much is it?
also people upgrade to electronic fuel pumps, where do you get them and how much do they cost?

would be appreciated if anyone could shed some light on this. :)

Hello Lewis,

The original oil pump specification as fitted into the P6B is perfectly satisfactory for the type of on road driving that the car was designed for. Shortcomings become apparent if the engine is used for high rpm work, that is running for extended periods at or over 5000rpm, which is not typical of day to day use.

The difference between the specification of the P6B oil pump and the later variation which ran from inclusion within the SD1 up until 1994 when an all new crankshaft oil pump was introduced....is the depth of the oil pump gears.

They are taller and thus flow a greater volume of oil per unit of engine rpm. Oil pressure will remain unchanged.

To fit you purchase the taller gears for the P6B timing cover along with a spacer plate which fits between the timing cover and the oil pump front cover.

I understand that Real Steel and RPI are but two businesses that can provide such a kit. I have no idea of the cost.

With the electronic fuel pump, I am sure that another forum member will shed some light as to where you might purchase one.

Ron.

Real Steel (01895 440505) charge around £45.00 plus vat for the oil pump kit. Ask then if they do a fuel pump when you are on the phone, or google 'facet' and you will come up with a few sellers, or try ebay.

You take the front cover off, if you can, drill a couple of small locator holes in it, then bolt it all together and refit cover.

Thunderdog used to suffer from low oil presure, so I changed the mains and big end shells (in situ) and fited the upgraded kit at the same time.

Oil pressure never dropped below 30PSI when ticking over and hot. It did seem to be quiter and smoother as well, but this could have been my imagination.

I have a facet red top electric pump at the moment. It's a bit noisy :?

thanks for the reply.
i see rover classics are selling an electronic fuel pump but i wouldnt bother doing that upgrade unless the car suffered from using the mechanical one (fuel evaporation).
im not too worried about changing the oil pump iv got loads to do to this rover before anything like that happens.
was just interested to know a bit about this sort of thing.
anyway thanks people
