Oil Thrower

On the nose of the crankshaft before the oil seal sits the oil thrower. It is my understanding that this device was fitted to the P5B and P6B, both of which had rope front oil seals. On subsequent Rover V8 engines which did not feature a rope oil seal in the timing cover, the oil thrower was omitted.

So, I am assuming then that the thrower was there to minimise the quantity of oil that could directly reach the rope oil seal... :?

Maybe it was just Rover making a statement saying that they are British, and that the oil thrower aids in the distribution of oil to the seal causing a pool of oil to appear on one's garage floor, an indisputabe way to prove the claim that it is British

A most plausible explanation Graeme. Certainly fits my engine anyway :)

 I must get round to changing that oil seal
