oil

Hi experts, please forgive me not knowing what boxes p6's have (I will own one soon) but I am asking a question about the LT95 4 speed manual box in my 1972 range rover,(please be kind it has the same engine as yours :p)

question is in the book it says the gearbox, transfer box and overdrive requires 20w50 to API SE spec.

now I am very carefull with what oil and how often I change in in the engine but for the gearbox etc I was wondering if the cheaper no spec 20w50 from wilkos would be ok? or will the spec matter even for the gearbox? its just these boxes do drip a fair bit and it all takes a lot of oil so it would be easier and cheaper to keep my "good oil" for the engine.

Many thanks

Miller's Oils do a 20/50 engine oil which was originally designed to be used in minis with the gearbox running on the engine oil, and hence is ideal for normal gearboxes such as P6's and yours that run on 20/50.

true but its quite pricey for a gearbox oil-I keep the better oils for the engine, I just wondered if the spec mattered for the box?

Oil is so cheap at Wilkos you can buy something half decent
I bought 4 litres of 5w/30 fully synth for £15 and it's £30 elsewhere

i agree if they had it but it was the only 20w50 they had as is the sad story at most places now.

I think anything thinner may leak out :p

IMHO the gearbox being a pretty vital part of the drivetrain, and a known weak area on the V8, deserves as good a quality oil as the engine. I use Millers Mini oil in my gearbox. Not that pricey considering how often it gets changed (every 6k miles in my car so just over twice a year) :D

I know what you mean, 20W50 is a tricky grade now. Cheapy recycled stuff or uber expensive Millers. Comma do a 15W50 but I would not like to use that in a gearbox.

Chances are if the LT95 will take 20W50 engine oil then it would probably work well with something like Dextron II ATF. It would be worth a phone call to a good landrover specialists such as K motors, or a gearbox specialist eg Ashcroft Transmissions.

The gearbox place I've used swears by ATF for most manual boxes, unless there's some specific reason to the contrary.

Depending how bad your leak is, its worth trying some of this stuff

It basically freshens up the lip seals. I've seen it improve a Defender transfer box, and it worked for me on a rear crankshaft seal leak.

Hi thanks, I moved things on a bit further- kicked out the wilkos oil idea and have ordered some smith and allen which is a couple of letters further on than the api spec in the book. pretty sure that smith and allen oil is re-badged shell oil anyway.

I tryed some wynnes stop leak in the overdrive which is the leakiest part and it sisnt work, the problem is I cant get the seals for it and I have tried everywhere!!!

luckily a mate of mine who runs a lexus v8 and an r380 in his car had a refurbed one sitting about from when he ran an lt95/overdrive combination.

it should have new seals, I have ordered the fitting gasket , which he usefully knew were the same as the ones for pto take off cover so when I get it all and have a bit of time (and my carbs back so I can move the car lol) I will get right on it :p

Not wanting to hijack the post...... but is there any specific reason to the contrary? I want to change the oil in my 2000TC standard 4-sp manual box and have wondered about ATF. There is a touch of synchro wear on 3rd and it struggles to engage 1st on the move when the oil is cold. Otherwise, it's a tight 'box. I am always weary when deviating from factory recommendations, as older components are not always resilient to modern chemicals. Would ATF offer me any advantage over 20w50? Does anybody else run it in their 2000/2200/3500S gearbox?

Fett, any pics of your R-R? I absolutely love the very early 2-doors. It's probably the next thing on my list of cars to buy - a 1971/2 model in Avacado or Atlantis! Lovely :)

If you do change to ATF, don't use the Dexron fluids, as the friction modifiers in it will make the synchros even less inclined to work. I've run ATF-G in an LT77 over a long period without any adverse effects, but TBH I've never really experienced any problems running P6 manual boxes on 20/50. The only problem is clutch spin which you can often cure by a switch to EP90 if you don't want to take the box out, but as I said, that's not a gearbox fault.

I'd say the faults you're experiencing could most likely be improved, if not cured just by setting up what you have already, properly.
