Old grumpy

I have now reached 50 and am now getting grumpier and grumpier with the so called service being offered by large companies.

Is it me? or is service getting worse?

Northern Rail's service was so bad over christmas that I wrote to them demanding my money back - they sent me some nice vouchers. I refused these and again demanded my money back. They said no, we went to court, they sent me cheque for £185.00 8)

I have just had to write to the post office for the 6th time this year :-

Of the huge volumes of letters and packets we handle, very few encounter a
problem along their way - but we take every single failure seriously, so I
apologise if we've let you down on this occasion

This is the 6th time this year that I have discovered that my post has gone astray - heaven knows how much goes missing that I never find out about.

A parcel which needed to be signed for went to Century Park instead of here at Century Street Industrial Estate, along with another smaller parcel and a cheque from one of my customers of £13,460!!

The cheque was posted from about a mile away on the 7th May in a first class envelope. The sorting office is half a mile away, and yet it still takes 4 working days to get here, via another one of our customers in Century park!!

I may have to ask them to strap it to a tortoise in the future as it will undoubtable get here quicker than your *service can offer.

Is there any way on earth that you can sort this out and deliver my post where it is addressed to, instead of it being distributed around the area?

Richard

*I am using the word 'service' in its loosest possible context.

So, am I getting grumpier, less tolerant, or is this country just falling apart?

The UK is definately going to pot, no doubt about it...

Really noticeable after we emigrated 3.5 years ago now quite how bad it is when you have something else to compare it to.

Yeah Australian customer service still leaves a lot to be desired at times but things like bank branches being open on Saturdays and a decent efficient postal service as 2 notable examples are hugely better than the UK.

I was completely fed up with Britain when we left and i must admit having been back a couple of times since for my sisters wedding etc every time we're back it just reminds me of exactly why we left!

I miss family and friends but the country itself - no thanks, has degenerated into a sea of poor customer service, stupidly expensive cost of living and awash with nasty chavs who seem to expect life handed to them on a plate.

Cheers,

Al
(quite definately grumpy and proud)

Hi

I left the uk in 97. I happened to marry an American girl and never actually wantedto leave the country. Much to my horror I have seen my home go from a fun place to live with an intelligent caring population descend into a Chav ridden, 'dumbed down' culture. It's such a shame. Of course it could be that in the interveenong years I've reached 'that certain age' where I agree with Victor Meldrew. I do think it a terrible shame that te UK had been allowed fall apart as it is. But I will also say that it has many things still going for it. It seems our major export at present is talent. The last two engineers my company in NYC hired were both English. Stuff created by enthuasiasts such as this forum, pubs! A real love of the countryside, and many other things still give mr hope for Britains future. I really do reckon that it will pull through as it has before.

Ok rambling reply over.

I'm getting grumpier by the year and I'm 57. Everything is doom and gloom
Only thing to cheer me up is that we've got Gordon Brown out but now we are going to find out exactly how deep in the brown stuff we really are ..........

Have to say that I agree totally with everything being said. I'm 34 and have been in the UK since 2001.. and I'm now planning to leave within the next 18 months, even if it means walking away from the house to do it.

Am already looking at shipping prices to take the cars back to NZ.. will bring the NADA P6 over, the Jaguar XJRS, and am debating whether to bring the series 1 XJ6 and my little boat too.

As for Royal Mail - my parents have sent two parcels over in the past year. Both arrived back in NZ smashed to bits with a note attached saying to return to sender, unknown person or never collected. The bastards never tried to deliver them at all.

I'm 32 and agree with all of the above. I used to have a pride of where I'm from, now I'm well and truly ashamed of it and all it stands for. If it wasn't for an unplanned redundancy (2 actually in a year) I would've had enough money saved to pack up and get out. When you compare it against the standard of living in Scandinavia (where I'm looking to move) we're absolutely a dump here, there's many other reasons apart from that too. I'd love to think that there can be a change for the better now we've actually got a PM that somebody voted in, but we are really so deep in the mire I don't know what the future holds.
Aside from that, I'd like to add on the Royal Mail subject. I used to have a postman who came to my house on the street first (I lived more than halfway down) to get me to read the addresses on the letters so he knew which order to take them to the houses in. Yes really! And in case you were wondering, he was not speaking English as a second language, he came from the local area born and bred........Education education education my a*se.

I once said,,"13 yrs ago" that if labour get in,and i can walk away from the uk to nz with £10k in my pocket i would emigrate.
??? what went wrong? :? :?
why didnt I go! :? :?
In a way glad i didnt, and this time I was 100% going to if they got in again, luckily now house prices have shot up i can add a 0+ to the £k's.
But as they havent, and i dont feel the time is right yet,am gonna aim for 2015 when I hit 55.
My mums out there, married to mike "step pop" and they are both 72,and despite my age I think I can get in on a family carer bond thingy!
I also will ship my cars,no wife or kids to worry about!
Dunno about caspercat though,he is 12 and probably got a few good years left in him,as he is as lazy and laid back as me!

Looks like NZ could be getting an influx of Rover nuts! Be very careful when shipping your cars over here though folks, fresh imports must go through a thorough compliance process before they are allowed on the road and UK cars with the inevitable patchwork of welding under the sills would never pass without costly engineer's reports.
Also, British cars are stupidly cheap here!

Same goes for anyone contemplating Australia, you can only bring in one car per person as a personal import and the compliancing process is not a fun one.

I said i wasn't emigrating unless my TVR could come too so thankfully i got it in without too much grief, but certainly wouldn't want to go through the process again. Definately one that could lead to extreme grumpiness if there was any rust etc involved.

Rover P6's seem plentifull and on the whole quite solid,so easy to buy a good one as a daily hack!
Only need to ship the TR6 then,,, :D
That saves a few quid, sorry,,$'s to buy one with!
