Sorry for the delay, here is some pics of my ipod connections on my radio, pics taken from the underside.

Other thing to note I did originally sit my ipod above the radio in the space provided but did get interference, so use it while in drivers glove box and all is well

Cheers Mick, I will peruse my audio innards later
Keep your window open, you will probably hear the swearing as I find that flesh does not solder very well!

Just wanted to say thanks for posting these pictures. I have converted my Radiomobile 1085X to play my iPod through and it works a treat. The Lady Charlotte has never had a radio fitted, has no aerial or speakers. I had an old Radiomobile in a box and the correct mounting plate for the car so it was just slotted in for the visual appeal.

I'm taking the car down south next week on wedding duty and I couldn't bear the thought of travelling 500 miles with no sounds at all so I took the radio out last night and using your pictures soldered an MP3 lead onto it. Rigged up a supply and a speaker and turned it on........

........result :D iPod plays through radio. Brilliant!

All I have to do now is fit my spare speaker to the front housing and provide a supply and earth for the radio and we're off.

Cheers Mick

Dave

Glad it helped Dave. That is a long way to go with no tunes. We are up in Scotland this weekend visiting friends.

I too ought to thank you. I converted mine on Monday, although I need to find a better lead and a switch for the input. I wired mine so it could be switched from radio to mp3, and will be putting a small switch in the glovebox to alternate between the two. 8)

The next question is... Can the original radio be modified to tune in to FM? I ask mainly cos there's three shades of naff all on MW these days... :?: I'm guessing it'll probably be a no no, (easily anyway) due to FM being modulated differently..

You guessed it...the clue is in the name. AM being amplitude modulation and FM freqency modulation. You'd need an FM tuner which would be easiest done by replacing the entire innards of the radio. Any attempt at incorporating an FM tuner into the existing circuitry would also need means of selecting that tuner and adjusting it to tune to different channels. I'm sure it could be done but it's not the half hour job soldering in the MP3 cable is. Not worth the hastle IMO.

this is what came with mine...

I've done a bit of research, and found This.

They convert original radios to modern spec: 4 x 45W RMS output, cd/ipod/aux input, FM tuner.

The radios look identical on the outside, and still work pretty much the same as they did.

The only downside is they're £349 each...

Am I being dumb :!: :?: what's wrong with a modern face off with all the trimmings bluetooth, USB, MP3, AUX, CD blar blar removing the face when at shows or parked up and putting the face plate over it so it looks like there is no radio fitted? That's what I've done or have I missed something :?: :? :?

oh not to mention the base box and amp in the boot when I fancy a bit of a boost

Absolutely nothing at all wrong with that. But there are "purists" who are striving to achieve complete originality, but still want modern performance from their car stereo.. Not saying I'm gonna buy one of those, even if they are a bit "gucci" and completely original looking. Thinking about it though, I actually don't totally get the solution from that link; I mean, The "purist" in me wants to listen to radio or whatever through the old, totally analogue equipment, don't ask me why. I'd actually quite like a late 70's setup, like for example a Sharp radio cassette unit, which first appeared in 1979, looks retro, but more importantly, has an FM tuner.

On the other hand, I completely understand the modern head unit hidden behind the blanking plate idea too. Each to their own I suppose. It's the same as putting aftermarket wheels on, I guess; the "timewarp" factor is lost.

^^^^^WHS (ie V8P6B)

I have a modern stereo in my car and do just that. However, it's not a brilliant fit and due to the console having been butchered by a previous owner the stereo just sits poorly in the gap and I have to be careful not to push it too far back when refitting the panel.

I have also just had given to me a new, boxed radio cassette player that looks far more in keeping with the age of my car so I'll be fitting that soon. I have one of those plug in cassette mp3 adaptor thingies for it too.... :D

OK I see but 2012 is fast approaching I'm sure that's when every thing switches to DAB :?: :?: :?

No, they scrapped the FM switchoff, as very few people have DAB, it doesn't work well in cars, and it was a daft idea anyway  They'll probably try again in another 5 years or so.

I'd heard that 2015 was the target date for radio to go digital, but as Richard has said no-one is buying digital radios for cars and very few people have bought DAB radios anyway. I've all but given up on radio anyway and listen to the iPod in the car (there are other mp3 players available :D )

I very rarely listen to the radio, I use the iPod. I wanted a radio which looked like it belonged in the car, but also wanted to play my music, hence this set up is perfect for me. I'm not bothered if at a show someone was to say nice car but the radio looks too modern if I had one fitted, it's my car I do what I want. It's me who doesn't want the modern radio casette/ cd player in their. When I look through the window I like the look of the period radio. So like others have said their is no right or wrong, if you like it, go with it. I did think about a modern radio and then put the blanking plate on when I leave the car ie carparks, pub etc but I knew I would not use it every time and eventually some scumbag would break a window for the radio. Nobody would nick this old radio ....... Would they ?
