Original Radio - Wiring Diagram

I've recently bought a 1977 rover 3500 V8. See pictures below. The car's interior is in very good condition but there is one thing that is bothering me.
At some point the radio has been replaced by a more recent one. This, in my opinion, doesn"t do the overall look of the interior any good...

I would like to install an original one. Does anyone know what brand/type of radio would have been delivered in this car?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Niels

Re: Original Radio

You would have to look for a Radiomobile like this:

If not the same very similar.

Re: Original Radio

the Radiomobile you have looks correct for the car.

Do you have an antenna fitted?

Re: Original Radio

The choice of radio fitment from the dealers was quite varied from many makes.
Std LW/MW or with Fm,no tape or with tape to 4 speaker stereo with a fader, even 8 tracks!
I would suggest you look for a good period looking radio with FM.
As long as it looks right,ie the 2 knob type!

They even did a rear speaker option which was fitted to mine from new. You get a little knob on the side of the center console to 'blance' the two out.

Re: Original Radio

Thats the 4 speaker,"2 door 2 rear shelf" with fader/balance option!!

Re: Original Radio

As your car doesn't have an aerial on the roof, most likely it was supplied without a radio when new and would have had a blanking plate covering the radio hole. Most common radios were Radiomobile (I have a Rover/Radiomobile brochure from 1971) but I think the dealer would fit whatever you wanted. I fitted a Radiomobile AM radio with ipod input in my '68 TC, my '72 V8 came with a Radiomobile 8 track player but my '67 NADA came with a 'Continental' brand (actually Japanese) AM/FM radio. As your is a European market car (i'm guessing), maybe a Becker or something would be appropriate?

Re: Original Radio

Hi,

That is a lovely interior, agree on the radio. There are specialists that make contemporary units with old-style fascias, such as these guys.

Take a look at what you can score on eBay as well. The German style buttons in this listing should be fitting in a Continental car like yours. Some Internet searches for retro or old car radios will do the trick.

Re: Original Radio

Nice interior you have and yes that radio looks like typical 90's styling crap! however I dont beleive that it essential to have a period spindle mount radio, there are many nice looking modern stereos that will work well with the p6 interior.

Re: Original Radio

Mine has a motorolla radio which looks pretty period. Problem is the sound quality is rubbish, so I'm looking at upgrading it, but without spoiling the period look. New speakers (in the standard location) will probably be the first move. Then wire in an ipod lead.

Re: Original Radio

I agree that a 2-spindle item is not essential in the least. In fact I think the Radiomobiles...etc, although period, look too old-fashioned for the P6 (being the forward looking vehicle that it was), especially with the later dasboard layout. I also agree that Niels unit is nasty though & an even later unit in black or silver would improve the look considerably & give far superior performance than an 'original' stereo (or mono as some would have been). Green illumination will obviously enhance the look & please avoid flashing 'boy-racer' type blue lights.

Re: Original Radio

My radio is a 70's period executives toy!
Its a rare Audoiline, with dictate direct to tape and record from radio to tape on it for the managers of the day.

Has quite good sound with dolby and I have a period 4 speaker system fitted so is even has period sound quality.
Not too bling but not bland either!
I am not into music in the way of most and dont need the dogs bollocks quality sound!!
Only ever have music on in the car, works van or garage as background noise really!
Got no old records, music CD's or ipod download thingies either!!

Re: Original Radio

Neil's radio is 1970's vintage . I had a Mk3 Cortina in 1975 which had a similar unit .Radiomobile / Motorola - both made at the same place and the deluxe version had 5 push buttons for pre-select stations

Re: Original Radio

The price of that Becker will increase a lot in the next days.

Please let me forward you to this old post.

I explain in there the way I managed to have my sound system installed. It is not Studio 54 while it's more than enough.

Just another idea.

Re: Original Radio

Actually, as my better half bought me an iPod for my birthday (8 gig which I've hardly dented yet, I'm a definite convert. :D ), I'm wondering what the best way is of getting a connection for it in the cars. I'll still want a radio too so would it be adding one of these chinese mini-amps to the system?

Re: Original Radio

I converted my Radiomobile AM radio by disconnecting the radio input from the volume control and soldering an ipod/headphone lead on in it's place. The volume control is not ideal as you need to adjust it on the ipod mainly with just a bit of variation on the radio knob but it sounds ok, and the lead comes out the back of the radio, under the console and through a hole in the back of the ashtray to the ipod so it's very stealth!
You can get a much flasher and costlier version of this from the Vintage Wireless co or some such but mine cost nothing.
