P6 Battery for 2200

Hi,

I reckon that the battery that I've had in my car since I got it now needs replacing (low power output even when charged and not holding charge for long). The battery fitted is an Exide 300 005R marked and measured as follows:-
66AH
CCA 510A
H = 200mm (225mm inc. posts)
W= 167mm
L=230mm
Terminals: post type (left hand +ve)

My 2200TC Owners Manual gives the battery spec. as 60AH at 20 hour rate.

So far, I have only tried to identify a current Exide battery as a replacement but not had much luck. It seems that many of those available aren't the right shape. Modern cars tend to have the battery held in place using the base of the battery rather than the being held in place by a metal frame like the P6. Also, many are of a physical size that might not fit in the box in the boot compartment. To compound this, many seem to have the +ve on the right instead of left (including the Exide Premium batteries that seem to be the closest match to the 005R type fitted).

So, questions are:-

1. I assume +ve on left post is correct?

2. Does anyone know what the correct CCA rating is (the 510A CCA on the one fitted
seems very high)?

3. Has anyone recently bought a battery for their P6 from a reputable maker recently
that has something in the order of a 3 year warranty and fits OK in the boot box?

Thanks.

075 fits well (in my 2000TC) and has the posts on the correct side.
I bought one from Unipart the other day. GBA3075. 3yr guarantee, EN550 AHr59 R/C100

Thanks Willy. I wonder if your battery is in the engine bay or in the boot? I had a look at the 075.

The 075 type below looks to be of a shape/size that won't fit well in my boot compartment. Because the top isn't flat I don't think the rectangular metal frame that clamps over the top of my battery will sit properly??

I saw this one on eBay described as 005 type (the one I have is an 005R). This is the correct shape/size and spec. but has the terminals the wrong way round. I could do with the +ve terminal on the left rather than right. Though I am starting to wonder if I could make the leads "stretch" if I got one of this type?

Thinking I might just take the battery down to the motor factor, dump it on the counter and ask the guy if he has one "this shape" with roughly the same spec. :LOL:

Rover repair manual gives battery as

Lucas RCA 11/7 or exide 6xazr 11r. 60 amp/hr

I think if you quote these they will find a modern equivalent.

No it's fine, if you look at the photo in the eBay listing posted by Michael you can just see that the raised section stops short of the other side. The metal frame sits flat onto both sides but doesn't grip the ends. The battery does sit a bit low so I put a bit of wood under it.
Cost from Unipart was about £45 IIRC, not bad as long as you have a shop nearby.

Incidentally, don't be tempted by an 071. The car I bought off Fester recently had one fitted and it was a job getting it out - a very tight fit and no lifting handles.

I only buy Bosch batteries for the cars now, there is a seller on ebay who can post them for a price similar to the cheapo. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mazda-3-1...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item416e51e804

The 2200tc has a Bosch 5BN (555155054) it slips in and out of the battery box no problem, I think this is the equivalent to a 075.

The ratings 55AH and 540amps. I actually recovered this from a renault Kangoo I had to dispose of.

If you want you can borrow it until you are sorted, my p6 isn't going anywhere soon.

You could pull the box out and go to Halfords and try some. Paul who owns ARJ did that, if you ask him I am sure he will let you know what battery he got.

Halfords sell exactly the right battery for a V8 which I assume is the same as a 2200? I have had mine for four years without trouble. Batteries are another of those items that are 'assembled' by the manufacturer. The acid, plates and box are usually bought in and assembled for sale. This is why lots of different makes sell exactly the same battery but in a different colour to suit their marketing. It cost me £95 mind so it wasn't cheap. It did have a three year warranty.

Surely the terminals are the wrong way round?
Quite possibly Dave. I don't know if the original factory fitted batteries were left or right +ve. The one I have is L/H +ve. However, I suspect that there is a enough free play on the +ve & -ve leads to allow me to use a R/H +ve.

Thanks for the offer Colin - I'll let you know if I get stuck. I charged up the old battery for about 24 hrs, refitted it yesterday and it started :) - though reckon starter was turning a little slower than normal and the temp. was above freezing.
