P6 Index - Online

Update on the online P6-Index project.

First of all many, many thanks to Brian Humphreys (Brian-Northampton), for really doing the hard work on this project, he has been scanning articles from P6 News to match the entries in the P6 Index. He has also scanned the P6 Index itself and supplied it to me in spreadsheet format.

I have taken the spreadsheet and all the scanned articles, and created an online P6 Index system, which will allow club members to search or browse the P6 Index and view any of the scanned articles.

I spent a little time working on it last night, and a little more tonight and have a basic working system, there is still a bit of work to do, mainly limitting the system to members only, and also making it look pretty !, but I have to say it's going to be a great feature, I'm having trouble stopping myself from browsing all the articles (over 300 scanned so far) long enough to get the system built, there are some real gems in there !

I know you're all going to flame me for whetting your appetites like this, but I had to let you all know. I think it's going to be a real asset to the club.

As a relative newcomer to the P6, I'm sure this'll be a mine of info for me...keep burning that midnight oil Richard. Guess you can have a day off tomorrow though! :D

Look forward to seeing the finished product!

Any more News on this oh Veneral Web Miester?

Also any chance of a sneak preview to whet our appetite and make more people join the Club

Finally Thanks to Brian for all the hard work put in scanning / pdfing the articles. :D

I'm sure it'll be a great asset!

I've scanned every technical / interesting article (as found in the P6 Index) from August 1994 (a few hundred) - which is when I joined. Richard is going to help me get copies of ALL previous magazines and I'll do the lot. Once the web page is available the new ones can be drip fed into the database until it's complete.

I've been helping Richard test his web pages, and it looks great - even though I've read them all and scanned them all, when they're that easy to look up, I still find myself searching through and reading them again!

The P6 News archives ....... are coming alive!

Bri.

This is brilliant, well done Richard and Brian.

When I joined a couple of years back my local section got their ears bent listening to me asking questions about this and that and they kept saying "ooh, that was featured in the mag many years ago". So they suggested to the committee that a technical mag be put together full of reprints but I think this data base is a much better solution for club members.

Gentlemen,

Its a shame that the annual membership is so damned expensive, it means that the likes of myself wont get a look in.
Oh well the site was helpfull while it lasted.

Martin P

Hi Martin,

The site isn't changing much - just a new members only section.

After all, the magazine is only available to members of the club, so it stands to reason that any articles from the magazine that is put online, should only be available to club members.

Every thing else stays the same, but club members get a little extra.

Brian.

Martin, I concur with Brian, there will be no reduction in service to non-members, just some extras for members, only fair really, but non-members are still very welcome, we're here to support the car and it's owners. :D

So long as this forum stays the same with open veiwership.
I used to frequent the UK Mitzy GTO forum for many years giving and getting info in equal measure, this was until membership was closed off to subscription members only and the forum became unveiwable, fine if you lived in the UK and got to enjoy the full benefit of subscription ie car meets and a host of other social activities and dealer discounts but extremely poor value if you lived in far off New Zealand how ever I am certain it cut both ways as there probably are far more GTO owners in NZ than the UK!

So for me so long as the forum here retains the status Quo I will be a happy chap :)

Graeme

I see no reason why non-members can't view the index , but not the contents .It might persuade them to become members

Right guys, it's LIVE !!

I've been struggling to find the time to incorporate the security necessary to limit it to members only, so in the interests of at least having it live, I've opened it up to all users, we'll limit it to members only at a later date, at least it gives non-members an idea of the what to expect from the P6 News if they join.

Give it a try and let me know if you have any problems.

And don't forget to thank Brian (Brian-Northampton) for scanning all the articles, we are still missing a number of early articles for which Brian doesn't have copies of the magazine, so if anybody has any of the issues relating to the missing articles (they're the ones with N/A instead of DOWNLOAD), and are prepared to loan them for scanning, please let me or Brian know.

I have a full set of P6 news magazines. I'm not in a position to loan them out (wrong side of the world and all that) but I would be happy to scan and E-mail them if required.

Fantastic resource! I have a copy of the 1968 Motor Road Test book with the reveiw of the P6B round here somewhere if you need a copy of it.

I had a look and it is great, managed to spot a few of my own articles there.

On a side note I was looking or trying to look at the SD1 club forum and it is members only but has an option to pay £7 for those who don't want to join the club just to look at the forum. Sounds good for the club and good for the paying members.

Richard/Brian

I've just had a quick look at the Index and it looks great. Well done, I'm sure I'll be spending many hours scouring through articles.

I have quite a few back issues going all the way back to Vol 1 so if there are any you can't find let me know and I can scan and email them to you.

Thanks for all the hard work. This is worth the annual subs alone!

All you non-members take note :D

Hi all,
The P6 News Index is currently under re-construction from the original artwork which is backed up on disc going back to the beginning of 1997.
Articles prior to 1997 will be scanned and made available to members on the website.
This is a slow process to do but will be active hopefully soon on the P6 Rover Owners Club website www.p6roc.com
All the artwork and content remains the property of the Club so will be available to members only - although I intend to have previews for non-members which should encourage people to join the P6 Rover Owners Club.
It has also been suggested to compile all the P6 News technical articles into a book of which I am considering.
This would be a great solution for anyone who does not have access to the internet as not everyone owns a computer.

I will post on this forum for those who are not yet members when it is live on the website.
Regards
