P6 LEAKING WINDOW SEALS!

Having always loved P6's, I have somehow ended up with 3 of them since January this year! The frustrating thing about all 3 of them, is that they all have the exact same problem, so it is clearly a P6 thing! Whilst I have several classics being a small time collector, I am new to the P6, so my knowledge of them is basic, (but growing all the time!) All 3 of them have wet carpets in the front footwell's, and on the inner sill at the bottom of the A pillars. Also the glove box's on both sides are getting water in them! Naturally the most obvious explanation is leaking screen seals. Can someone please clarify if this is as common as it is on my 3 cars? And is the front windscreen seal a 1 piece item, or is the bottom part of the seal a separate part to the rest of the seal? How difficult are they to replace? and is it a job only for a window fitter, or is it an easy enough job to do at home? Any lead on where to buy the seals and cost, would also be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any help with this...

Liam

Unless you are sure the screen seal has gone I would have a search through previous posts, as I have seen several possibilities suggested when others have had the same problem.

When I first got my car the front passenger footwell was wet under the carpet. The gutter had rusted through allowing water to run down between the A pillar and the stainless trim. A small hole, little more than a pin prick, had developed and the water was entering there.

Interesting, thank you.....For now, until I am ready to begin work on it, I have bought a good quality cover for my V8 one, to stop it happening again, and I have removed all the carpets to get them dry in the house (will undoubtedly replace them though once I begin work on it) I have had an oil heater and dehumidifier inside it for a few days now, to get it bone dry! I will investigate your suggestion when it comes time to stripping the car for restoration. I looked at my 2000SC manual one today, as it has gone into a P6 specialist for some work, and looking over it, we could see the windscreen rubbers have perished, and the foam inner strip at the bottom of the screens has also disintegrated, so that cant be helping things. I will be surprised if there is any rust on that one, as prior to me getting it, it was all done and the car painted, and I know they stripped the stainless trim off to paint it. (They should have replaced the seals then!) I will be replacing all the seals on that car in the next week or two, along with a few door rubbers which are also suspect. My 3rd one, a 2000SC Auto, could be a few things!...Looking at that today also, I notice the rubbers and foam are pretty much in the same condition as my manual one, and also found a nice hole in the bulkhead which is undoubtedly letting its fair share of the UK's finest weather in!! I would not be at all surprised if there are holes in the gutters in that one as per your suggestion. Thanks for your reply...

I spent ages trying to locate a leak from my P5s screen it finally dawned on me that it was in fact condensation on the inside of the screen running down.
Incidentally,I've bought stuff from Wadhams and found them good to deal with.

Received some weather strip from Wadhams yesterday for my P6. I don't know how to fit them yet but they seem to be very good quality. Will need shaping for around the quaterlites and for what ever attaches them to the door. £20 for rubbers for all doors, bit more with VAT etc came very fast. Hope this helps

That's an interesting one, the cars were condensating badly, but since using a breathable cover in them, that has stopped it. I suspect on 2 of the cars, that it may be rust in the bulkhead causing the problem.

It does help mate, thank you. I am now suspecting though, that in the case of 2 of my cars anyway, that rust in the bulkhead is causing a funnel for rain water to get in onto the foot wells. No doubt on all 3 cars, the window seals are shot too, which cant be helping anything. If they were boats, they would have sunk by now!! :)
