Was seat belts fitted in the rear if so what type where they and is there anyone out there who have any as i want to put a set in as i have 2 young kids and dont want to take the risk

many thanks Jason

Hi jason.
You can find and fit the same type as you have in your front,or you can fit inertia's from a 90's xj jag!
Do a search of the forums for seatbelt fitting for previous topic on the subject!
I have Irvin grey statics in my 71,V8 and have fitted the same to the rear to keep it looking period!

just had a quick look on ebay the jag belts seem about £70 with out the buckle it clips into. is this a bit expensive?

Another route would be to fit Securon belts. IIRC the model number you want for rear inertias is 254. If you look at the price on their site, make sure you're sitting down.

Google around the Mini parts suppliers (which they also fit) and you'll find them at around half the Securon site price.

You could try a scrap yard, although there are a couple of points to mention here, 1) avoid any from vehicles that have obviously suffered a major collison, as the belts may be stretched. 2) the belts need to operate in a horizontal position (and lock if jerked), so best to find some that are mounted that way in the donor car, most front belts are mounted vertically on the b/c post so won't be much use.

If you go for the brand new Securon belts, go to your local Motor Factors and order from there. They will sell them significantly cheaper than Securon will sell directly.

I did my whole car - 2 static front, 2 inertial rear and 1 rear lap belt for £161.97 by buying them this way.

Hi,

my P6 has no rear seat belts fitted and I wanted to fit some - preferably to match the original lack webbing ones in the front. However, considering they are to restrain my young kids, I guess that new/safe belts are the priority. Looking around the forum, Securon 254 belts (bought cheaper from a suppier/factor), seem to be the answer. Although I believe that all P6s have suitable mouting points, before I go pulling out trim etc. I would appreciate any general advice. For example, do the Securon kits come with good fitting instructions and shall I need any additional bolts/nuts?

The kit should have everthing you need for the job. One mounting point on the parcel shelf, one to the lower side, behind the backrest & the third in the region of the centre armrest. It's a pretty straightforward job & shouldn't take much more than a couple of hours.

Yep it's straight forward, just get all the seats/squabs out of the car so that you can find the anchorage points. Run a tap through the threads before you start, you'll have old paint and/or surface rust in there and these need to be cleaned. Also get yourself some spacers to build up the 'gap' in the parcel shelf between the metal shelf and the hardboard top that is the thickness of the felt. The spacers with the securon kits wont be enough.

Also, the screws in the securon kits are not long enough for the parcel shelf. You'll need some longer ones. I got some chrome plated ones from Namrick online which look great and do the job!

TRM/Brian, thanks for replies/advice.

Can you remember the bolt size/length (think I saw 7/16" mentioned for anchor bolts). Also, will washers (again 7/16"?) do for spacers?

Thanks.

Seatbelt anchor bolts are always 7/16" UNF. I've just measured those that come with the Securon kit are 2" in length. I can't remember what I used, but I think 3" would be good. Get the ones with thread all the way to the head - I think they call them set screws.

washers may do. I used old P6 seatbelt spacers from the front belts that Pilkie was kind enough to find. You really just want something that will be strong and take up the space. If you go down the washer route, glue them all together because once you put the hardboard parcel shelf back on, the spacers will move and your washers will end up all out of alignment!

Gents

Thanks to all of you who have commented on the seat belt issue. I looked on the Securon website and they are quoting £70+ for each seat belt! I just bought 2 rear seat belts from Partco in Norwich for £70 the pair! I'm sure there are people out there who can beat that but it just goes to show that it pays to shop around.

cheers

I've got grey Irvin buckles front, am I to understand that the same set will fit in the back? Where can I get some?

Will Securon or other remade statics look similar? Any recommendations?

Yes, the originals will fit in the back too. Keep your eyes open on ebay for some or contact the specialist suppliers. They may be a little pricey for the ones with the parachute emblems on. I have them in the front of my S1 & put the front belts from my donor car in the back which are the same fittings as the early belts but have the later click-in buckles.
