Series 1; I know this car; checked it out on a car lot in Yokohama about 18 months ago, also sold in Japan new in 1970, has aftermarket Air fitted that has condenser+ blower in the boot, with vents in the rear parcel tray. Hard to tell, but is ( very faded + chalky ) April Yellow

Rover P6's are Rare as rocking horse manure here; its surprising to see 2 x V8's offered at the same time....

I know that according to the parts book that roof rack is on the right way round, but I think they look awful like that & always have ours backwards so the curve of the side bars follow the line of the roof.
It looks so much better.

Very cool roof rack on the series one , are there many English cars on the road in Japan ?

Yes, I believe the Roofrack was a Rover option back in the day, these do come up for sale sometimes There are quite a few classic English cars like MGs,Triumph TRs, Morgans, E-Types +the occasional Riley or Jensen but it's really only the Mini that's huge here with lots of clubs and specialist shops+ magazines, plenty of LandRovers + RangeRovers too

A lot of left hand drive English cars too as these get imported from California + Texas + New: there are Bentley, Rolls dealerships + Aston Martin +Jaguar although these aren't really "English" cars anymore

Would love to know chassis no. of the Series I :(

# 45227236E - very interesting ! There´s only one other 45227xxx number on my database.

Rudiger

Rudiger,
Japan was one of the 1st countries to adopt exhaust emissions standards + they had a helluva job tuning the Rover V-8 as a New import to pass this test; when I was browsing a UK SU carburettor site recently there were HS6 "Japanese jet needles" listed. The 452 Prefix may well be "Japanese domestic model" which would have been right hand drive, had an uprated "Tropical" radiator, "japanese jets" in the carbs and the curious amber side-indicators on the front guards that only the Japanese cars seem to have ( a legal requirement from about 1970 on ) + Km/Hr Speedo

The P6 2000 was sold here, and the P5, but only as a 6-cylinder car ; I've only ever seen one example of either car

Because of prohibitive import tariffs the P6B with all "bells and whistles" was a whopping 5 Million yen ( ! ) that's almost 45,000 Euros in todays money, and naturally that had a great deal more spending power 35-40 years ago; the price of a comfortable country home + true "Cadillac" money
A P6 would have been an extremely prestigious car to own in its day + no doubt these are changing hands now as they've outlived their owners ( ! )

'67 SC2000, a one-owner car which belongs to a Mr.Suzuki in Setagaya, Tokyo + has been garaged all it's life: "the inboard rear disc brakes have been a curse", but still the only car he's ever owned

gets test driven by CarGraphic magazine here.... the reviewer likes the seats, which he suggests are quite like the Rover 75s, considers the ergonomics of the switches + dash to be intuitive, suggests the steering wheel is not original+ very diplomatically suggests the springs + suspension bushes on this particular car are totally st*ffed...

452 prefix is UK built, RHD export model. Plenty of them in NZ. I don't think Rover had a seperate chassis number for Japanese market, there probably weren't enough differences to warrant it. Km/h speedos were around and I guess the carb needles would have been fitted to any market that required emission control. I wonder if the side marker lights were fitted in Japan? (cos they seem a bit random) Have you seen any up close? Are they Lucas or something else?

Yes, the differences aren't that significant

It's quite likely these were fitted Japan-side and may vary from car to car, certainly fitted at a different place between the '70 + '76 cars these are very similar to indicators fitted to any number of 60's/70's Japanese domestic vehicles; if I had to guess I'd say these look just like Honda motorcycle parts Next time I turn up one of these I'll take a better look + comment; I might go and see the '76 next week if it's not sold

Got my fingers crossed I don't have to fit these to my car when register it, think these look awful ( ! )

Do you have one in Japan too? I thought yours was in Auckland. They certainly won't be required over here but if you did need to fit some, it shouldn't be hard to do a better job than those ones. Something small, period and Lucas, mounted discreetly would be ok.

I intend to bring mine up to Japan + register it here once it's finished; but recently too much work + too little time has stalled the project
I've done this quite few times over the years with Mini Coopers, a Mercedes 180 I picked up in Canada + a VW bus I bought on a trip to California, so I know the drill.... much easier to get a numberplate on a car if it was sold here back-in-the-day, the P6 was, the P5B wasn't which would make it nigh on impossible to import + register one here now, and pre-War vehicles nearly impossible to register here too. Not as liberal as NZ is that's for sure
