long story short, a few months ago on gumtree I saw an ad for a car exactly the same as mine - brown, vinyl roof, sheepskin interior, tow bar, same Aussie/NZ spec aircon etc etc. Ad mentioned that a 3500S came with it as a parts car.
I ummed and ahhhed about it too long and it sold.

Forward to two weeks ago, a 3500S pops up in the same small country town. Yes, it's the parts car. When the brown one sold, the buyer never came back for the "S".

400 kay round trip later:

That's the old man having a chat to the last owner.

Body looks sound, apparently it had a hit on the passenger front (guard and door have been replaced), but was repaired long ago, then it was a daily driver for a Rover fan for many years. Then he parked it and it sat ever since. It's been raided for a few bits, but nothing that isn't easy to find on the web, although it has no shocks, so I am after a pair of front Konis.

1st gear is apparently crunchy, if I can find another 4spd (rare as hens teeth in aus) I'll throw one in or if I stumble across an SD1 5spd (also uber rare), that might go in. I've nearly got all the bits for a supra W series gearbox swap so I'll just keep an eye out on gumtree and ebay and see what pops up first. It needs a radiator, water pump, front door cards, probably a lot of tlc on the steering and brakes and the chrome strip across the top of the front windscreen.

This will replace my Mazda wagon that I built up as a track/rally car and made it too nice, so I'll aim for some hillclimbs and just general fun without going overboard.

You lucky dog, power steer and what looks to be sundym glass, there loss your gain.
Looks like late model cloth upholstery, English assembled rather than the NZ factory build.

You'll cry when you hear what I paid for it :)

I cry when I realise that I bought the whole car for less than the postage ALONE of shipping over a V8 manual pedalbox, clutch cylinders, flywheel and clutch. :( ah well.

Yes I think from memory all "S" cars were english built. I'm not sure about the syndym, it might! It definitely has power steer, I don't think it had aircon and it has a white looking cloth trim on the seats.

great find!

Hilarious how good an aussie parts car is looking at the state of english parts cars!

Hi Geoff,

Didn't realise it was an 'S' when you sent me the phone pic. Good find, replacing the Rover gearbox with something much stronger and considerably more reliable would definitely be a good idea.

Ron.

Hey Ron,

yeah, an S! Such a bargain that I couldn't pass it up. I've watched a few S's come and go on ebay and gumtree and thought that this one was perfect. Not too good that I would be pulling apart a perfectly good car, but not too far gone either.

I think I've found a Toyota 5spd, I've got the parts and price list from Dellow, Al gave me a front bumper and some other bits, I just need a radiator and some Koni front shocks.

Nice pickup Geoff, I saw in the latest aussie "Just Parts" magazine, pg 55, a company called Speedmaster advertising aluminium radiators that may suit if you can't locate an original rover rad, 26"x19"x2.2" may do the job at $185.00.

Hi Geoff,

Koni shocks won't be as easy to come across as they once were unfortunately. The radiator business that Scott mentioned might be the go, but beware of Chinese radiators, they might look good, but looks are by no means everything.

Ron.

Well I've been put onto a near complete but rusty auto p6b so I might get a radiator from that and just block off the trans pipes. I have a friend that repaired radiators for years so that's easy. With the konis I may have to get some built by top performance in Vermont. Not sure.
