PAS noise

Hi all,

I've managed to get a decent audio of what I hear whenever ambient noise settles down - noise from the power steering (and a click from the idler). I've just rebuilt the pump, set the belt, and have run it for a week now. I've today given it a quick bleed using Ian's recipe - opened the bleed screw up for a couple of seconds at left and right lock. What came out was clear fluid. The steering feels good, nicely assisted, smooth, even. What's the "song" about?

Tor, I don't have experience with P6 power steering. However, on other cars with PAS, I have heard similar noises when:

A. The system is not fully bled. So, could be worth trying to thouroughly bleed again. I have found you sometimes have to go through the bleeding routine a few times to get all the air out.

B. The pump bearing is worn - either the bearing is worn out or maybe the pump has been run without fluid in it causing bearing wearout?

If the bleeding doesn't fix it. Might be worth dismantling the pump to make sure it is thouroughly clean and maybe try replacing the bearing? If you do replace the bearing and refit the pump, make sure the system is filled with fluid before you start the engine.

There is the "groan"...but also the background hissing that has a "build up" sound...fluid restriction somewhere(?)

Hi Tor,
what was the outside temperature when you made the video? My PAS is quiet in Springs ambient temperature, but on a frosty morning I get "the song of the whale" until everything warms up. I put this down the the cold making the fluid thicker, but that could be the imagination of an idiot! I do not have the mooing sound in Spring, Summer and Autumn, only Winter.

John.

It's louder on startup whatever the ambient temperature, which is usually quite low here, and audible like in the clip regardless. The pump is rebuilt with new bearing and seals.

I also have the hissing noise close to the limit of the wheel range either way, left or right turn. It's a bit loud to be normal. No groaning though so I can't help! I was going to write a separate post to ask about it but I thought I would tack it on here instead.
