Petrol "crisis"

You can blame him, he is the head of government, in charge of the country, why do we have a water shortage, lack of rain, Spain doesnt have water shortages like us, we have had hose pipe bans in Manchester, the same Manchester that on a sweltering sunny day everyone carries a brolly, just in case. I might be being a t### but I still use my hosepipe whenever, they don't drop my water bill so why should I stop. Stop the leaks on the water mains first

Maybe they'll have a petrol strike while the Olympics is on so everyone can stay at home and watch it ?
I suppose I can't blame Cameron and Co for the water shortage .It annoys me that these mickey-mouse car wash sites can continue to operate yet most of them probably pay no rates . tax etc and the water they use is not recycled

Though we don't have [as yet] any hosepipe bans here [as far as I'm aware!], I've wondered how car-washes can still operate when a ban is in force? Surely that uses far more water than a garden hosepipe?!

I agree with Mick, we must be the laughing stock of Europe, we come to a standstill when it snows, a bit of sunshine and we have a hosepipe ban and our trains can't run in the Autum because of leaves on the track  Is that why we seem to have lost Great Britain for United Kingdom :?:

I can't speak for the UK, but as far as car washes are concerned, here in Cape Town we had a similar situation with the last round of water shortages where the car was had a queue around the corner because of the hosepipe ban and folks wanted to know why they cold operate a water hungry setup while we could not use a hose in any way, shape or form.

Council's reply was that they were a commercial operation and it was their business to use water, so they didn't have the same restrictions we did. The fact that they get their water cheaper added salt to the wounds, too......

Much the same over here John. Hosepipe bans tend to be domestic bans and not commercial. So if you use a hose as part of your business the ban doesn't apply. However, if you run your business from home.......

Pretty much the same up here too Mick, though we've not had a hoespipe ban since the great drought of the 70s

I think most of the problems we're having can be traced to fat cat corporations intent on keeping their shareholders happy by paying big dividends whilst the service they provide gets worse and worse. Of course the government doesn't help by burdening those of us who don't pay top rate tax with having to make up the shortfall left by the reduction to them. Even if, as Osborne says, it doesn't raise a lot of revenue   I'd still rather they paid it than the rest of us.

This thread is turning into a right "have a go" topic.

And you can guarantee there will be no industrial action of any kind over the Olympics.

I wonder how many hose pipes it would take to match the 665 million litres of water that Thames water wastes in leaks every 24 hours? That apparently is a 25.7% rate of leakage according to the press. Would be good of them to go fix it instead of coming down to building sites creating snag lists :? .
Regards,
Dave

Fixing leaks means employing people and costs money. That eats into profit margins.

Why do that when you can make more money screwing people with price hikes and water meters that will mean we will eventually be paying as much for water as we do petrol. :x

Offwat fined water companies a total of £500 million in fines over leakage rates, if that is to be believed, whereas the water companies made £3 billion. Not much incentive there to fix leaks then is there.

Even if that is the case, who do you think ended up footing the bill for that.....

My car was booked in for its mot last Friday but when I turned up he said could I bring it back today because they could not cope with the cars queuing for fuel, I did not mind as I only live down the road
People where coming from miles around as most stations had run dry
He was saying because it is in a village and prices are higher he normally gets around 20 cars a day calling for fuel
He is a very happy man :)

Don't most car washes recycle the water to some degree ? Probably not the jet wash type, but I thought the drive through ones did.

I only wash my cars about once every 6 months, so doesn't really affect me
