Petrol whiffs !

Hi all,
I have a 1971 3500 auto with the HS6 Carburetters (i.e. the type with the float chambers on the front) recently after a short run (approx 10 miles) I stop the engine for a few minutes, start up again, then stop again then I get a strong whiff of petrol for a short period, I can't see any leaks anywhere, generally the engine runs fine with no problems, can anybody suggest why this is happening.

Usually when the circumstances are as you describe, the reason you can smell petrol is owing to a leak. Some possible locations are in no particular order, fuel reserve tap, carburettor and / or connections, mechanical fuel pump and / or connections. Is everthing clean and free of grease / dirt etc so you have a good opportunity to spot any leaks?

Thanks for the reply Ron,
I have had a good look round all these areas and I can't see anything obvious, all is kept clean on a regular basis but I will have another look, this whiff only happens after a run i.e. when the engine is warm

This could just be a small amount of petrol vapourising after the engine has been switched off and the under bonnet temperature has risen because of that. When you open a can of petrol you can always smell it. It can often be because the float levels are incorrect making the fuel level too high in the float chamber, and hence in the jet tube as well. Have you got the overflow pipes correctly fitted?

Hello Harvey,
Thanks for your reply (sorry for the delay with my response, broadband problems!) The overflow pipes all seem okay, haven't touched them for ages, as this is a fairly recent problem I wonder if one of the floats is causing the problem ?
Regards Dave
