Hi all.
As some of you may have read,I was hopefully getting a new toy.
Well I can now let you know I have got it as its now in my garage!!
Heres a few pics to guess with,I will do more for the album tomorrow.

Re: Pilkies new toy,and tinker project

Looks very nice. Does this have a cherished plate too?

They're great cars, but there's a few common (and potentially expensive  ) faults to watch out for. Most are easily and permanently curable with preventative maintenance though. Give me a shout if you want any pointers, it's very similar under the skin to my XJR.

Re: Pilkies new toy,and tinker project

Cheers Tom,its a 1999.
Was careful to check out what known faults are and check as best I could its ok.
Apart from the click whirr of stuff coming to life,as you turn the key its silky smooth on cold start up,no tappet, chain or tensioner noises,,just a nice PURRR!!
Slight knock on rear over bumps, but am sure its exhaust or poss a susp bush.
No saggy headlining,no obvious rust.
Will change drive belt,as I dont know when it was last done, and check belt tensioners at same time.
Other than that, have just got to put the PLK 1E plate on it asap and ENJOY IT. 8) 8)

Re: Pilkies new toy,and tinker project

Did you buy this as a f@nny magnet, Pilkie ?
Slightly worying you're taking the personal plate off the Rover in favour of the Jaguar

He He!!
Nah just another 50 yr olds crisis!
I may put the CON plate on the V8 pro tem,and sell the 2000 with a new number,I will see how things go when its up for sale at Shepton Mallet this saturday.
There is method in taking the PLK1E plate off the rover as hopefully will transpire around July.
Also gives me more poser points on the Jag :p ,as when its on the rover its an E reg on an old car!

Re: Pilkies new toy,and tinker project

Dont worry,,, ,ive not forgotten the rover V8,as thats my holiday project!! :)
Just given the jag a good clean and polish this eve, checked it over for anything obvious, and spotted a windscreen chip,so will get that sorted on the insurance in a week or 3.

Re: Pilkies new toy,and tinker project

Hi Pilkie,

Sounds like you're searched out a good Jag. There's no timing belt on V8 Jags, they have simplex timing chains. Silent timing chains is a good thing, but unless you have evidence of the tensioners being replaced by 4.2 V8 spec ones, you really ought to have them replaced. Jaguar tried various versions, but didn't get the reliability nailed until they introduced the later 4.2 engine. There are 3 chains on the AJV8 and the problematic ones are the ones from the inlet cams driving the exhaust cams. The early tensioners are made of plastic and the pad that rubs on the chain brakes up. This causes the rattle at idle, and fairly soon after the spring then wears out the chain with expensive results

As a 1999 car, yours will have a Nikasil engine, unless it's had a replacement engine under warranty. Googleing this brings up some scary stuff, but there's not too much to worry about now. The problem was cheap high sulfur petrol available in the late 90s rots the nicasil bore coatings. This was worst on cars that only did short trips and didn't get a chance to warm up. The petrol is now no longer available, so the chances of problems developing now are much less than they were when the cars were new. As far as I know, my car is still on the original nikasil engine, and going strong. Symptoms of nicasil problems are a high oil consumption, and the air filter will be soaked in oil. Jaguar will be able to perform a leak down test to confirm if the engine is in good health.

The final thing to look out for on the engine is the water pump and thermostat. The early engines have a plastic water pump impeller which brakes up, causing overheating at the back of the block. This doesn't show up on the gauge though. Again, replacement with later spec parts cures this. The gearboxes are supposed to be sealed for life, but really the fluid should be changed at 60,000 miles for maximum life. Any Jag specialist should be well aware of the common problems, and know about all the later parts to cure them.

I would keep an eye out for rust too. New (ish) Jags can still rust, just not to Rover standards  . I've had to have welding done on my XJR, despite the car looking fine from the outside. The knock from the back end could be a suspension bush. The ride and handling is fantastic, but non of the suspension components seem to be very robust. I've had to replace various bushes and mounts over the years, despite my car not having done many miles.

I hope this doesn't all sound too scary. They really are a cracking car, and like you say, get out in the sun and use it.

Very nice Mr. Pilkie sir.

My oppo Duncan spent many years repairing these and loves them. Rock and roll!

Re: Pilkies new toy,and tinker project

What a nice thing, looks like a good buy Pilkie.

What prompted the venture into a modern car then?

The basic story is that,it is a,"I will have one of those one day",thing!
Ive always liked them, but prices way out of my cash to splash zone, till now.
A while ago I was wanting a british 2 door coupe in electric blue with grey//tan/cream interior. I looked at a GT6,Scimitar,XJ6 S2 coupe,Gilbern invader, and nothing really floated my boat except the XJ6,and they were silly money or rust buckets.
Then a chance spot on Ebay,I saw the prices of the early XK8's had dropped almost to within striking distance,so the search was on.
And this is the result and I am so far still over the moon.
I have a feeling they probably have bottomed out pricewise, and any good ones will hold their value.
Due to the fact I have not been able to get Connor prepped and ready to sell,I have decided to take the Jag to the Shepton Mallet classic car show tomorrow,so any of you that are going on Sat 16th,look out for me and it.
I will be the guy wandering around with a soppy look and a big grin from ear to ear!
Will have a TR6 cap on,so say hi if you spot me.
True it is based on the XJS and has some ford components, but hey just look at it,its almost pornographic to look at innit!
Real modern styling twist on the E types is what turned me on to them! :D :D

Tom.
Thanks for the info,I am sure that you will be my 1st port of call if I have any questions.
An old school mate who is into modern jags has just bought a fully loaded top spec S type.
He doesnt know ive bought it,so I will go see him on Sunday,to show him and get the details of his jags mechanic just incase.
I have the details of the previous owner,so will contact them to see what they had done if anything.
And another good point,,, if this doesnt get me laid,,,nothing will!!

Re: Pilkies new toy,and tinker project

It's a lovely car as is the XJS... It was the first modern car I saw that did a proper job of interior wood trim with a modern twist. I'm not a speed freak - for me it's the ambience of the car that is good!

1st thing I did Dave.
Introduced me and my fleet.
Ive got a technical Q up already, but no response as yet.

Just checked the prices for them here in NZ     still silly money
