Play in the Brake pedal.

Right the Rover is passed the MOT, pretty pleased with that, however, having driven it around for a while I've noticed that there is some play in the brake pedal. To be precise, there is about a centimetre of free travel before the pedal seems to be acting against the master cylinder, then the brakes seem to act as they should be.

I'm aware that the brakes can be adjusted by the threaded shaft to set the brake pedal travel, however the shaft is wound in as far as it can go, yet there still seems to be a fair bit of free play on the brake pedal.

I'd prefer to have the brakes to work straight away, rather than having a good centimetre plus before any actual braking action.

Anyone know what I'm actually talking about?

Yer I think I have had the same on mine. You have to be carful with this adjustment as if you get it wrong the brakes will lock up. When I re did the sills on my master cyclinder the other month (only to find my air leak to be the brake light switch) I found it took a few attempts to get it the height I liked. If the brakes are not working as the peddle works on the cyclinder then may need a service, give them a quick bleed to see if that stifens them up a bit. The bar from the peddle should be resting on the end on the plundger in the cyclinder, if you see what I mean. So the play should only be in the wrong direction. Does that make sence? In short, carry a spanner and screw driver around with you till you get a hight you like, mine is set to almost the same height as the throttle.
