Polishing Cam Cover?

Hello Ray.
Its all down to hard work .
I gather the covers will be removed .
Already painted ? Remove paint .
Get them very clean - inside and out . Kerosene or similar and thoroughly clean and rinse .
Next bravely Use the wife's dish washer - they come up clean as . You will just have to put up with the fallout if she comes home early .
Next use wet'n dry sand paper . Probably start with 400 and work your way up to 1000 grit . Gets all the high spots off and you will end up with a smooth dull surface .
Next you will need a mechanical buffing wheel .
Use Belgum Alu metal polish for aluminium , or something similar and buff and buff and buff .

I did my airflow elbows and carb cans this way . Look great .

Years ago I had my early classic Range Rover mags wheels professionally metal polished . They came up like chrome .

If you don't have access to a buffing setup, use paper upto 3000 grit (ebay if you can't find any locally), then attack with the polish for a hand rubbed finish.
You can achieve very acceptable results like this, just as long as the time is put into the first stages.
Think of it like bodywork, mostly in the prep
