Poppy the P6

I know it's a bit brutal, but have you given it a good rev to the red-line yet ? Make sure it's well warmed up first just to be safe, but this often frees stuck valves.

I have given it a few blasts on the loud pedal.

have been giving her a wee run now and then in hope it will free off. May stick something in it.

If it is running then how bad can it be? pretty sure the piston or the camshaft would have complained by now.

What I will try is remove the plugs and have a look feel inside.

Friends and fellow P6 owners,

Project AR J is now away to new owner so it is time to get some work done on Poppy.

With the snow coming and poppy living outside I will need to mull over where to start.

The car does drive under her own power but the brakes need an overhaul due to standing for so long.

I may start with the doors, they were painted as bare shells so I need to paint the inside and then fit the door frames and furniture which is easy enough.

There is a bit of light welding to be done which was either not done well first time around or has developed since the car was last on the road in 2004.

I also need to get a new rear bumper as this was dontated to the AR J project.

Progress update.

With the heatwave last week I spent some time on Poppy.

The new doors will be going on, I do have to re-use some parts from the existing doors but I have got one on and have driven the car up the th driveway turned it around and had a look at the engine noise, I am starting to think it may be the chain slapping but need to spend some more time investigating. I did buy a borescope but can't see the valve seats. :(

Hopefully more progress will follow.

Looking good :) I do love that colour, so may have to buy another P6 as Sparky is going to stay Lunar.

I didn't know the 2200TC had a computer under the bonnet?

Trickling Redex into the carbs with the engine running used to clear sticking valves , but can you still get Redex ?
Brake fluid or ATF has been used as an alternative

No problems getting redex, I use it in every other tank of fuel in the 800 to prevent sticky valves. There are several version available these days, but the bog standard red stuff is what you'll want, and can often be picked up cheap in supermarkets.

Easy on it has taken over 2 winters to do a door :p

The roof panel is still on and the replacement is a handy place to store odd items in the garage. I have a bit of welding to do so might leave it until that is finished first.

The garage does need a major reorg and I have got 2 MOTS due and the SARR so busy time.

In Preparation for building up the remaning doors I have to do a little bit of work on the drivers window regulator, the original has a chipped tooth or wear so slips a fair bit. I did rig an electric motor to one many years ago but never fitted it. I looked it out and it is still working other than a broken wire which was easily soldered. What I will need to do is make a temp power feed/switch, my finished set up is going to take a little longer to get it right.

This is the modified regulator, the SD1 regulator was cut down and welded (roughly) originally I did it just to prove it worked and would fit in door without any trouble. I will make the others neater if I ever get round to them, after I did this I wondered if it was worth the effort considering it is only 3 turns to drop the window..

I am going to go through my box of lamps and see if there is a decent set, hopefully I can get it looking like a real car again.

I am on the scrounge for a few parts if anyone can help. Passenger front wing trim.

Right today I decided to sort the drivers door out.

It has been about 10years since I had to adjust doors I bought to fit this car. The set I got painted all came off the same car but none fit first time on Poppy. It was getting late tonight so I loosened of the hinge pin and managed to shut the door for another day.

The day was not without incident, I managed to shatter a door class and my cluttered work bench is now littered with chunks of glass, a sundym one too but there was welding splatter hence the need to change. I wish I had a video of it, the glass shattered then exploded after a slight delay or atleast that was how it looked to me.

The motor works well though I have to remove the nylon stopper as it was hitting the motor before it was totally down. I need to rig up the relay and cut out.

 That window goes up & down pretty fast!
Are you going to use the SD1 switchgear for the windows and do you have any plans for how to fit it in the P6?

Sd1 switches are naff, I do have a plan but do need to put more work in.
The window is fast now but it will probably slow down until it stops altogether ;-)

Another sunny day and more work done to Poppy.

The rear doors are now fitted and not a moment to soon, I think they were about to fall off on their own.

The Rear doors were the only original panels fitted to the car. Poppy is a closet almond lover, the bonnet, rear valance and all four doors were originally almond as was the old boot lid and the pasenger front door.

The rear doors were a bit easier to build up than the fronts, the bottom hinges needed to be shimed but learning from the front doors I adjusted the door shell before fitting the frame. For now the windows wil be as standard other than the drivers door.

The car was looking a bit bare so dug out a decent set of rear lamps from my box of bits and fitted. I was wondering how many lamps and lenses I have, years ago my other half seen them and asked how many lamp units I needed, I have few others in the garage to.

Can't have too many lenses.

I may have sourced a usable rear bumper so will need to dig out the mountings. Also need to decide what to do about the tow bar, perviously I had an aftermarket one fitted but have the correct rover cranked bar but I don't have the support that goes under the boot floor, if anyone has a spare I would like to take it off your hands. or I could just leave the tow bar off altogether, I don't need to tow but was always handy having the option to borrow trailers etc.

Might be the last bit of work for a week or so as the P5 is book in on Thursday for an MOT and need to give it a good check over an maybe adjust the parking brake.
