Power Steering Pump Drip

Hi All,
I did a bit of a search but can't find a reference, so sorry if this has been asked before.

I have a drip form the power steering pump. Having looked at it I can't see where it is coming from. I made sure the hoses were tight. It is a tiny amount, and only seems to occur when the car is running.

Any ideas please.
Mike

Thoroughly clean the pump and then run the engine to see where the leak is coming from. There is a lipseal on the pump shaft, and sealing rings between the two halves of the pump body.

If you ever work it out, let me know. Mine has leaked ever since I had the car. I have stripped it and rebuilt it with new seals. I have new seals on the pipes and it made no difference. It is another of those winter jobs to sort out!

I thought I would add to this thread as I have just removed my PAS pump for the second time. When I rebuilt my car I didn't rebuild the PAS pump. It leaked. Eventually I removed it again (a challenge in itself on a NADA car) and rebuilt it with new seals. It still leaked. I changed the seal on the low pressure banjo to no avail.

Having now got the pump on my bench again, It is obvious that the leak is coming from the threaded plug on the top directly opposite the high pressure hose outlet. I assume that the spring and piston inside is some sort of pressure bypass? The seal on the plug is an O ring, but it is not trapped. Instead it sits at the top of the plug and just slides into a counter bore at the top of the hole.

This doesn't seem to offer a very good seal. I plan to fit a new O ring and install the plug with a good amount of PTFE tape.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem with this plug?

Nine times out of ten a symptom like that is the pressure relief valve sticking creating the excess pressure

Yup. Did exactly the same thing on the turquoise car last week. Just had a look now and it doesn't seem to have worked. :(
