Hi Everybody. White Rover now has the 2200 running gear installed from the 1974 P6 donor car. A lot to report really. I must say the end result has been worth it. Rover pulls better on hills, gets away from the traffic lights smartly, has more torque at driving speeds, a delight to drive so much smoother and responsive.
Anyway I rebuilt the engine with a new crankshaft, pistons bearings, seals, side plates, timing chains etc. Took my time and tried to get everything correct. As regards the gearbox I looked at the Haynes manual and decided to get it profesionaly rebuilt by a specialist gearbox shop, who assured me that they were capable. Not a good idea as it would not stay in gear, so back it went with further assurances and the same result. So I removed it and rebuilt it myself as per the manual and it now works as it should not maybe the slickest but direct and positive. Another thing I had the drive shaft fitted with new U J S and balanced ( I can't do that at home) not very well as ther was quite a vibration, off it came and a different shop did it again and now we are nice and smooth.
Rover, is an ongoing project as now I want to rebush the rear suspension and fit the 74 springs to firm up the rear abit. I would like a bit of advise about the clutch as it has a bit of judder if I am not careful, A completely new clutch was fitted as well as machining the flywheel.

Demetris has just replaced his engine mounts (front either side of the engine) with VW Golf Mk3 examples, with a substantial improvement in engine smoothness and in clutch judder. Getting the rear gearbox mount set up exactly right - they're very adjustable - will also have a major effect on clutch judder. From which you will gather that a principal component of clutch judder is nothing to do with the clutch - rather driveline shake.

Chris, i had no problem with the judder before either, i was just saying that the new mounts, albeit soft enough to absorb vibrations, were still controlling the driveline mouvement.
However, i agree that faulty mounts could cause judder.

Well done on the gearbox rebuilt John. I did the same some 5 years ago, and after about 70K miles the gearbox still runs and feels perfect. I followed step by step the factory manual to set up all those important tolerances, something that i would imagine that your "gearbox specialists" missed, creating all sorts of problems.

Thanks for replys. I will jack him up and adjust the rear mount. I have had a look at the manual and will follow its instructions. The Rover manual is a recent purchase.

Hi. Thanks for the info. I have now reset the rear mount ( snub bush) as per the manual with no improvement, is there anything else which I should be looking at. The judder is very annoying and I worry that some damage will be done, any help would be wellcome.

I can only tell you the way we set them at the factory ,probably the same as the workshop manual .
Slacken off the two bolts on the front stabilizer , slacken off one exhaust joint close to g/box , then adjust the spring so snubber bar sits in the center . retighten stabilizer exhaust etc.
