Protecting chromework ?

Now that the cold, frosty, wet, days are almost uppon us, the subject of chrome arises. I have some chromework in the shed to protect and obviously some more on the car. The car will be stored outside overwinter, under cover, with as good a cover as i can afford. (also a good coating of Bilt hamber Hydrate 80 for all the steel i can find) What is the best way to look after the chrome, short of an air conditioned garage, or taking it off and placing it in a sheepskin rug on top of the airing cupboard.

I have heard of both gease and Vaseline being used. I can remember back in my motorcycling days, that many guys "greased up the chrome for winter" not caring what it looked like. as it soon attracted the dirt. As far as I can recal the chrome was always still bright in the spring. Or is that just my memories, like the winters always being colder and the summers always being hotter, etc ?

So do i have to coat it with those old mens tales remedies, or is there something else that will work ?
