Without looking at the regulations, I think that the donor vehicle has to have an MOT or has had one expiring no less than 6 months ago.

The donor vehicle needs to be taxed and Mot'd.

They can sell the plate separately, but it would need to be transferred to a retention certificate (unless immediate transfer to another vehicle), but it (donor vehicle) would still need Mot/tax before they will putthe number onto a certificate, which will specify who the 'nominee' is, ie who can register the vehicle with that number. Certificates are normally renewable annually at £25 per year (can extend by more than 1 year, but still £25 per year). You can also change the nominee details once it has been issued, again for a fee, which I think is also £25.

The local licensing office might also wish to see the donor vehicle if they wanted to check/verify any identity issues etc. I have been transferring my numbers for 30+ years and only once had to take one of the cars for inspection, which took about 2 mins!, and that was about 30 years ago.

Hi Julian,

The car will need to be road legal IE taxed, MOT and Insurance unless just expired. As it is an older car it may need to be inspected by the DVLA which is done at the weigh station on the ashley heath roundabout.

As you know i am selling new Land Rovers and am dealing with this on a daily basis.

It cant be sold seperatly from the car on this basis it has to be sold as a complete item.

Hows thins going with the fleet? I have sold the Avacado 'S' now.

Hope to see you soon, Happy new Year.

Aaron.

This link will help clarify the law regarding selling a plate from a car.

It definately HAS! to have a current MOT, and as long as the tax didnt run out more than 1 yr previous and it was then put on sorn straight away, that should be fine.
If the car has been laid up in a garage or suchlike for XX amount of years then it will have to pass an mot, then be insured and then taxed in order for the plate to be sold.
And possibly inspected to see it is legit!!
Also look on the special notes, "front page bottom sec 3 blue" on the V5C to make sure it doesnt say non transferable,as it may have had its original plate removed years ago and a non transferable one issued by the dvla.
If you contact the help desk in the link, you can ask them," I am thinking of buying this number is it transferable??"
Go here and do a check to see when its last tax expired,,ie date of liability.

Good luck,I hope the car is not a basket case if it needs to get workerd on for an mot,if it is past it,the plate is worthless and will be scrapped with the car.

an update on this car!
its a moggie traveller donated to an animal charity.
they say someone offered over £3k for the plate (beggers the question why not take the money then!)
thay now realise they can't sell it seperately so have left it with the car BUT!
they advertised the car at £500, reasonable i suppose
now its £3500!
they stuck on 3k for the plate!
how daft can you get!
the plate is only 385aht or something!
oh well, another wasted ebay listing
it has the feeling of womans work about it!

I think it's about people being put in a situation they haven't got the first clue
about. They think because it is old it is worth a fortune. someone offers them
a sum of money they think this someone knows more than they do, they are
frightened to death they are being turned over. they now take a different
approach but they have got this figure of 3K in their head and think it is a given.
All this is done in 'meetings' over time. Meanwhile the car is sitting somewhere
getting steadily worse. It will probably end going to a breaker for a few quid,
weeks or months done the line. Shame!!
