I've had a radio/cd in 'Hazel' for some time now but noticed that the live feed (for remembering the settings etc) was getting hot. This was joined to the feed for the light switch & may have been too high a current

I've tried to take a feed off the 2A fuse - a series 1 V8 with the 4 fuse box - but can't get any current no matter what I do.

Any ideas? or what do all you guys do with yours? :?

hi phil,
like colin i take it from the cigarette lighter. i can not remember on the series one fusebox, but i would have thought there should be a live feed from one of the eight connections ( four fuses, in and out off of each fuse ) a bulb earthed and touched on each of the eight connections in turn should find you a permanent live feed.

The live feed to maintain the memory for the radio should only take a few milliamps, if its getting hot something is not right.

Many thanks guys for your help. I've now connected the feed to the cigar lighter & everything is nice & cool :D

...but the sound is now crackly over '20' :( , 'tho I'm sure that's nothing to do with the feed - I've not used the car for 6 months.

hi phil,
have you got a suppressor in the system, that will cause crackling.

Just to clarify

A suppressor will stop the crackling :)

Is that when the engine's turned on? The engine & heater etc were off when I was trying it.

I've tried a different player which doesn't crackle, so I think it must be the unit...

Yes Phil

The suppressor is there to smooth out the interference from the HT ignition circuit and works when the engine is running. The fact that yours crackles with everything off suggests an internal problem in the radio. Probably some dry solder joints or old components that have gone out of tolerance or perhaps the speaker output terminals are needing cleaned. Have you tried that radio in another car?

Phil, you said it starts to crackle over "20" - is that the displayed volume level on a digital unit or something else?

It could be that your main switched power source is too weak and your music signal is distorted on its way to the speakers as you crank the volume up. How much power does the unit put out, and where have you picked up your power?

Older radios with old-style volume knobs tend to accumulate dust and pollution over the years so that they can crackle whenever the volume is being manipulated, but stop either when you let go of the knob or fiddle your way to a "quiet spot". Never tried to clean this kind of thing up, but depending on how old or complex the units are, some contact cleaner in quantities and a hair dryer could be something I'd try... Doesn't sound like yours is of this type though.

Thanks guys.

I'll try the unit elsewhere. It is a modern one & did work perfectly when I last had the car on the road before Christmas.

Another thought; the unit did keep temporarily cutting out when I moved it about before I placed it in the housing, so a loose connection might be the culprit.. :?
