Rattlely SC.

I've finally found some main bearing shells, they arrived today from Thorntons and hopefully I'll fit them this weekend.
By reading the blog I understand that to loosen the bottom chain I must screw in the allen screw to release the tensioner but I'm not sure how to put the tension back after I've finished.
Mr Haynes is not very clear on this.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Tony.

Well that will definitely answer your poor oil pressure at a hot idle. There is only one oilway through the crank, which supplies each bearing shell successively. In replacing the big end bearings you've only really fixed 4 of the 9 places hot oil can escape from, so that answers your last problem (although always worth checking the release valve while your there).

The chain tensioner has a form of ratchet mechanism inside it. When winding it back you will need to put some pressure on the pad to push it back into the housing. When you're done you could ease it out a bit by hand if you liked, but I wouldn't bother. When the oil pressure gets behind it, it will push it back out into contact with the chain and the ratchet mech will take up the excess to prevent it moving back in.

Well, replaced the mains today. Many thanks Redrover and others for your advice. The only serious problem is that New Zealand lollypop sticks appear to be metric, I had to grind mine down as it was a bit too thick.
Seriously though, things went as Redrover and others said they would, even had the same problem with the front main with the chain appearing to pull the shaft to one side. Bit hard working one your own but managed with a bit of wood, large screwdriver and a couple of unkind words.
The mains were in the same condition as the big ends...no whitemetal left but the shaft looks fine. I also fitted a new relief valve spring just for the hell of it.
Result is no oil light at hot idle and no noises :D
I'll give her a run to and from work next week and if all is ok will take her on a 300km car club run next Sunday
Tony.
