Re-assembling twin carbs and intake manifold

Started re-assembling my twin carb set-up this afternoon. I've painstakingly unmasked the freshly painted intake manifold, and I've cut out my own paper/card gaskets for the water pipe fittings on the front and back of the intake manifold. See pic below. Do I re-fit the stubby pipe at the back and the outlet neck covering the thermostat at the front dry, with just the grey cardboad gaskets? Or should I use a smear of something? If so, what? Vaseline? The fiendishly expensive Loctite Super Gasket stuff I've bought to seal up the oil sump and autobox pan? Or some other brand of squidgy gasket product that I haven't yet bought a whole bottle of, only to need the merest smidgeon thereof once in my lifetime!? But seriously chaps, how best to proceed?

Blue Hylomar on the stat and heater outlet pipes, maybe even a smear of it on the engine sump gasket just to hold it in place, but nothing at all on the gearbox sump gasket, other than Vaseline which can be used to hold the gasket in place if you feel the need, but I've never had to. No gasket sealers.

I've always preferred Hylomar Gold, Harvey. I think they're pretty well equivalent in application aren't they - just that the Gold doesn't go hard and lumpy quite so quickly. Either way, neither are hugely expensive Alasdair!

I had one of the thermostat housing bolts shear on me last night, anyway upon re assembly will i need a new gasket for the intake holes (the big one that sits under the intake manifold)?

Or will a bit of blur hylomar do the job?

I'm going to blast it and repaint before fitting aswell.

Hello John,

I would be inclined to use both a gasket and a suitable sealant, either Hylomar or Permatex or what ever you like to use.

Ron.
