Re: New Range Rover / Defender

I have been watching the Range Rover Evoque launch in aronline.co.uk.

Among others, the Land Rover M.D. mentioned that Spen King would have approved of the new Range Rover.

And then, they went on to inform us that Land Rover hired Victoria Beckham as a designer, or stylist or something like that anyway!

I am sure the whole world is heading the wrong way....

hiring victoria beckham is a very odd thing to do. Let's face it a stick is much cheaper has the same figure and knows more about cars....

Doesn't that just say it all about the market Range Rovers are aimed at now ? I expect she designed the cup holders or the rear seat DVD screens

They were slagging the new RR on Top Gear, front end far too "bling" for them, probably Ms Beckham's input !

Lets just hope she wasn't involved in the seat design or else you'll have to be a size 0 to fit in !

Not that I'll be buying a RR any time soon, and if I did it would be a proper "classic"

I totally agree with the comment, as someone who earns a living selling new Range Rovers this car and the marketing is all wrong! I dread to think of the type of client I will be dealing with next year, They should keep the LRX name and keep it a Land Rover as the plan is to move the 2 brands apart in the future.

Regards,
Aaron.

To be fair, the 'proper' Range Rover, pre bling facelift (up to about 2008) was/is a magnificent beast. The new 4.4-litre twin-turbo diesel V8 sounds like a stonking good engine, too. If I could have a 2007 Rangey with the new TDV8 and maybe the new eight-speed ZF autobox with paddle shifters, I'd jump at it. Mine's dark blue with cream leather and the boggo 17" wheels, thanks.

Oh, and for anyone who doubts it, the Rangey is still utterly untouchable off-road. Not even a Defender, or anything from Jeep, can touch it, let alone anything German.

That new style Defender is more hideous looking at the rear than anything I could imagine. And Range Rovers are indeed far too blingy, even for footallers wives.
Though maybe not, the tasteless hags.

New style Defender, hideous? It hasn't had a restyle since 1958! Are you sure you don't mean the Discovery 3 (and the new 4), which looks like it was meant to have a spare wheel on the tailgate, then it got left off at the last minute and slung underneath?

I know they have to replace the defender soon due to the safety regs... it'll have to be good to step up tot he mark of it's predecessor...

About bloody time too. The Defender is hopelessly outclassed in every way - it's unrefined, it's thirsty, it's overpriced, it's rattly and horrid. There's nothing it can do that a Range Rover or Discovery can't do much better. How they've got away with selling it for so long I cannot think.

I've heard rumours that they'll resurrect the old Discovery's chassis for it?

The Defender is a tool, in the way the original Range Rover used to be and like all good tools, it is pleasure to use. It is the last vehicle in the Land Rover range that can have a real life, a purpose. It is not something that marketing people told us that we need to own, as is the case with SUVs.

Quite right - but the Defender is hopelessly outdated, extremely unrefined, uncomfortable, thirsty, slow... there are better ways of climbing a 1-in-3 covered in loose shale, and a Disco or Rangey can out-tow it too. In fact, many's the time at green-laning meetings that a Defender has had to be pulled out of a muddy ditch by a Range Rover...

I am talking about real life, where the cars earn their living and where you will find (surprise - surprise!) Series Land Rovers (What? they are oh so outdated!) still going strong.
On the other hand you' re talking about green-laning meetings!
Obviously you did not get my spirit.

Anyway, this topic started for Spen King and now is rather derailed. Could someone (Chris?) please transfer the irrelevant posts somewher else?

I'm talking about real life, too - there's not a farm round here doesn't have a (used) Range Rover. Late-model 'classics' and P38s seem particularly popular. Defenders and their predecessors are all but unknown, because they're just not tough enough, nor can they cope with challenging conditions like a Rangey can.

Yes, I do indeed mean the Discovery.

The new Range Rover is actually German. And it can be nixed off road fairly easy. All you have to do is bring an old Range Rover.

I've never understood how Rover went out of buisness when they made the world beating Range and Land Rovers. How that happen? I don't even know how the two became seperated.

According to wikipedia, BMW sold Land Rover to Ford in 2000, probably because it was a profitable company and they could get a good price for it, before handing over the rest to the Pheonix plunderers....

BMW had a spiteful streak a mile wide from what i can see. They effectively killed rover when they took the newly developed R30/Rover 55 away with them to become the new 1 series. They showed good business sense selling Rover and splitting it the way they did.

Rich.
