Re: P6 project: BW35 to LT77 manual box swap: the verdict

Re: P6 V8 project: BW35 to SD1 LT77 5spd manual box swap

Have you kept the exhaust system from the automatic set-up and just adapted the one mounting plate? Or have you swapped in a front exhasut section for a manual car?

Re: P6 V8 project: BW35 to SD1 LT77 5spd manual box swap

I notice that you have used a solid copper pipe to plumb the clutch in. Are you not a little worried that this will fail due to metal fatigue?

Just a thought, awesome job apart from that bit :)

What part of Somerset are you based? Just wondered as I get down to Glastonbury and Wincanton fairly often and fancy a look at this machine you have built :D

If you put a coil in the pipe it gets round that particular problem. That used to be done on capilliary oil guages with solid pipes. I'd still prefer a flexi pipe on a clutch though, even if it's a flexible hose between two solid pipes.

Re: P6 V8 project: BW35 to SD1 LT77 5spd manual box swap

Hi Guys,

Mr Task, (sorry I cant remember your name  ) Yes it's the standard Auto Exhaust system using the original bracket modified to fit the manual box, luckly I have a good 1" clearence between the bottom of the clutch slave cylinder and the top of the exhuast that crosses over & under the sump, I may use some heat wrapping as extra protection.

Rich, do you know I didnt even think about possible flexing in the copper pipe! there is a fair bit of give in the copper I know but I have beefier land rover engine mountings combined with the new rear g/box mountings so movement is minimal.
Still saying that I may use a flexi section as I have some thick spare hose, this pushed over each copper end a good say 2" with two jubilee clips on each end, would this be strong enough for the pressure?
Other option as Harvey advised is too add some coils in the pipe, i think I have enough to do this, will have alook tonight.

I'm not far from Glastonbury, I live in Somerton about 8 miles away, not far from Sparkford where Haynes Motor museam is :D be great to meet up one day! let me know when your next down in Somerset!

Thanks Damian

Re: P6 V8 project: BW35 to SD1 LT77 5spd manual box swap

That's good news Damien, as I was worried that to complete the BW35 to LT77 conversion I'd also have to buy a front exhaust section for a manual car and cobble it together. If you've managed to get the auto exhaust system to fit, I hope I'll be able to pull off the same trick! I guess you haven't got the use of a car lift, but just in case you ever get the opportunity to take a photo of your car from beneath, showing how the exhaust system sits in relation to the transplanted gearbox, it'd be really useful!
Oh and my name is Alasdair, but nobody ever spells or pronounces it properly, so I also answer to plain old Al, a.k.a MrTask!
I just scored a V8 LT77 bell housing off fleabay, so that's anoone more item off my shopping list for doing this conversion...
Looking forward to hearing about your first manually shifted test drive!

Re: P6 V8 project: BW35 to SD1 LT77 5spd manual box swap

Hi Alasdair, no problem I can do that for you, I'll try tonite if I get chance, any pictures that you think will help then let me know & I'll post them.

Yes the exhuast is fitted back as original, the only modification is the bracket as pictured above, I trimmed it down in size, bolted it to the exhaust in the original place then cut two small brackets from a spare peice of steel, bolted them to the gear box, then tacked welded them to the cut down bracket, removed it and then mig welded up fully, I made sure that the bracket was not touching the rear gearbox mount.
Hope this helps, I'll try to get more pics of the underneath for you.

Cheers Damian

Hi guys, well it's back on its wheels today, replaced the brake pads, re-bled the brakes, made up the new bracket to fit the heat shield between the clutch M/S & o/s exhaust manifold, so axel stands & ramps removed, engine started, left it to get warm, on tick over the gearbox is fairly noisy but on engaging the clutch it goes all quiet, the box is old and not been used for about 12 yrs but release bearing is new as is the clutch plate and pressure plate (its an AP performance version, 30% increase) So the drive, firstly so much more quicker having control over the revs, and boy did feel awesome :D such a different car but 2nd gear was bit crunchy at first but after a short while it was fine, a bit of a judder when pulling away, not sure what that is as all new mountings, could it be that there is ever so slight play in the input shaft and possible worn spigot bush ? I didn't replace it  anyway overall I'm really pleased with the result, the noise it makes going up through the gears is fab and top end torque is excellent! Well worth the conversion !!! cheers Damian, Mr task I have some pics to upload for you, try & do it tomorrow eve.

You left the BW35 spigot bush in place? If so it's doing nothing as it's 3/4" id, the LT77 needs 1/2" id. It's steel as well, so it's a good thing it's not the right size.

Re: P6 V8 project: BW35 to SD1 LT77 5spd manual box swap

Hi Harvey, No it's the SD1 spigot bush that came with engine that the box was fitted to. I meant to say I didn't replace the SD1 Spigot bush.

Ah, that's OK then. Being a small spigot they don't tend to suffer with spin & drag, and the correct bush will support the front of the shaft.

A few more pics , still waiting for a dry 'unsalted road day to give it a real test run, no rush as I've saved a small fortune in petrol whilst doing the work !

All sorted now, new braided flexi pipe fitted, new clean fresh fluid now in the system and no more issues, even the judder has now gone, maybe due to it bedding in ? anyway have maybe gone over board with the heat proof exhaust wrap but now the clutch master cylinder is almost entombed in it so & staying cool. I made up the small shield & bolted it to the inner wing under both master cylinders for extra heat protection as I reckon that's where most of the heat soak was happening from underneath, same with the slave cylinder, overkill perhaps but at least I'll now they are well protected.
Had to repair the centre console with plastic card & good old araldite, fitted the SD1 gaitor, will do for now, would like a Hurst 8) style shifter with bigger/flexier boot, very USA muscle car but great feel when changing gear, this actually feels relay nice, the box is worn as noisy but it works for now with a good result! :D

Hi James,
Sorry for slight delay in my reply, yes unfortunately its for sale, needs must, I can always build another one, still plenty of 3500 V8s out there at good prices for a reasonable runner!
I'm glad that my build was a great inspiration for your Elegant Thirsty Dinosaur!
Cheers Damian

Does anybody have a good pair of front wings going?

Hi kees57,
Sorry for my late reply, haven't been on here for a while since I sold the car.
Yours does look far more healthier with less tin worm, how is it going, be good to see some progress shots!

I do miss my P6 but needs must, well credit cards needed to be paid off, one day I'll do another project P6, I'd love to know where it is now & who owns it, I sold it beginning of May to a chap in Salisbury then about 8 weeks late it was back on Ebay. Anyone know of its where about? be great to know :)

Cheers Damian
