Rear screen

Hi . Can any one recommend a sealant that i can use around my rear screen ? The thin strip between the chrome and the vinyl roof . Mine has gone hard and is flacking off . I know that is part of the actual seal and i eventually need a new one but i want to seal it up until i get round to getting a new seal .

Stina, I recently replaced my rear screen rubber and used Arbomast windscreen sealant (applied with cartridge gun). Apparently it is <the> sealant for the job.

You could try to cure the flaking sealant problem by raking out the old and squeezing in some new. I had similar problem but eventually changed the rubber and stripped the old sealant out completely for a permanent solution.

I slid a blunt screwdriver round the channel of the screen rubber to get rid of all the old sealant and then stuck a mastic gun of black gutter sealant in there. Worked a treat, can't be noticed and has held out the last 18 months in all weathers. At £3.49 a cartridge it was worth a punt. Sure there are better 'proper' products though.

Stina.

In the past, i have used a product called Dum Dum, with good results. It comes in a tin and stays flexible and workable all year round (a bit like putty). All you need to do is rake the old sealer out and apply Dum Dum with a flexible spatula and smooth off afterwards.

I used dum dum to temporarily fix mine... Alledgedly that's what Rover used in production too.

Whatever you do, DON'T use anything that smells of vinegar!

Acetic acid is the culprit and is in most RTV "silicone" sealants.

Take no notice of him Stina. It comes in either black or tartan.

Metric spirit level bubbles are £4.99 including fitting Mick, or £5.99 for the imperial one.

I know Mr Q, will be doing my rear screen so will look out for some, I am interested in the metric bubbles though.

 why would you think that, Poo rub, silly rub and you can get it in tartan, it probably tastes nice as well. Having said that, builders use an adhesive called " sticks like s##t. Why them names, suppose they stay in the memory.
