Rears not working

Seems I am having a bad run of luck with my p6B  went for a warrent check and failed on the rears, no handbrake (rusted up) and only 1 rear caliper working (poorly), The car had an extensive rebuild of the brakes 3 to 5 years ago and has barely done 1000Km since then being dry stored and driven about 3 to 4 Kms once a month to keep the brakes in action  so was somewhat suprised by the no go result! was quoted about NZ$1000.00 for a rebuild  so I guess I will have to do the job my self. Does any one have any frustration saving tips and shortcuts on how to approach removal and refittment?

It's certainly worth lowering the diff by unbolting it from the rear carrier. This gives much better access. Watch the body / caliper hose though!

Be methodical, service the calipers fully, & when it comes to refitting, ensure that the handbrake cams are against their stops before putting the handbrake mechanism back on.

You don't need any special tools & you can do it without swearing

There's another thread on this subject in much more detail - very helpful when I was rebuilding mine a few months ago! 8)

Have a search through the fourm posts, there is loads of rear brakes topics and just about everything is covered.

Might be an idea to get some recons sent out and do a swap. But if they were done in the recent past should be ok for a rebuild.

The are fiddly so get the diagrams right in your head and work out how it operates before you strip it down. maybe even get a spare for reference.

They are complex but nothing to worry about once you have done one set.

Hi Graeme, I'd advise taking the discs off as this will give you much more room to swing the spanners round in.

If you've only got one caliper working then it could be the connecting pipe between the calipers that's causing the problem as it could be blocked.

And finally, don't take both calipers to pieces at the same time so that you have one to use as a reference.

Good luck.

Double check that the cable is not over adjusted stopping things adjusting up properly from last time before you get into a pointless rebuild. A rebuild is usually for leaks in my experience :)
They're often set up wrong to get a good handbrake by those who don't understand the system, which stops self adjustment which only shows up later

Cheers gents, will have a look in the weekend, The hand brake lever goes right to the top with no pull resistance so maybe it rusted up with the hand brake on, only a close inspection will tell. I will be busy in the weekend with other Rover bits and pieces, I will be visiting another p6 enthusiast who has a 2200TC for sale or wrecking, he has offered me the boot and touring kit but the car is complete......

The cause at least is clear, Graham - P6's are meant to be used, they protest if stood with nothing to do!

So you're about to complete the collection with a 2200....

Chris

yes used is best!! could be tempted to have a 2200tc but really the throb of the 8 is too addictive, still you never know, they are a great car as well.
