Reconditioned Lucas 11AC

The Lucas 11AC alternator in my P6 finally gave up charging the battery a couple of weeks ago (during its MOT) after months of 'pulsing headlights' and dancing ammeter needle. I was going to have a bash at reconditioning it myself, but time is very much against me at present. After sending my old unit to Classic and Vintage Dynamos of Notts, for a very reasonable £80 + VAT they gave me the option of reconditioning my old unit or sending a reconditioned one from stock, either with a year's warranty. As the one in the car was not the original I opted for the latter to save down time.

I was pleased to receive a very nice and brand new looking unit which I fitted on Saturday. All seems good and I now have a smooth ammeter needle that gently rises with the revs as it should do.

Hi RP,

The needle should normally only show a postive charge after the engine has been started or after idling with the lights etc on, and only briefly at that. If the battery has been severly discharged, then a positive charge on the ammeter will last for much longer. Once the system is in equilbrium, the ammeter should register neither charge nor discharge, but rest directly over '0'.

Ron.
