Removing middle silencer

I am thinking of removing my middle silencer on my '72 3500S, what size of pipe would I need to fit over the existing pipe. I plan to cut fairly close to the silencer to give a fairly straight run of pipe as it is a bit kinky under there! I would make up a bracket to attach to the existing silencer hanger. I realise that once I have done this, I will need to get new needles. I am not sure which ones are currently fitted, but will investigate & seek advice on here as to which would suit best.

Hi Dvd,

You may not need new needles, it will largely depend upon the type currently fitted, (they could be too rich already), and the design of the muffler that you will be removing. Be aware that you could end up with a drummy sound inside the car, having spoken with other owners who removed their muffler.

Ok, cheers Ron, I will keep the silencer, just in case I'm not happy with the sound, although I'll probably like it  will be even better when I can get some toyosport manifolds to go with it  wrt. the needles, I will see how it drives when I give it some welly (after changing the water pump though!) hopefully, as you say, I might be ok with the current ones.

I removed the back one. No drumming, just awesome noises. The pipe splits in 2 now just above the de dion. The silencer I took off was one of the most restrictive things I've ever seen. Conservative estimate would be another 5bhp from getting rid of it. The pipe that replaced it is the same size as the existing single pipe.

Maybe it would be easier to remove the rear one, hadn't thought of that. Awesome V8 noise is exactly what I'm after  . What diameter pipe do I need to just fit snugly over the existing pipe?

Just for clarification, the standard exhaust system features two distinct noise abatement devices. The one adjacent to the rear n/s spring is a muffler, the other beneath the boot is a resonator.

my middle box was cut out and a Cherry Bomb welded in --sounds better.goes better too-but dont fit a straight through tailpipe--you will need ear plugs otherwise

I'm not removing the middle one now, I was having a look earlier at the rear one & measuring up, even used a bit of old school maths to find out the diameter of the pipe after measuring the circumference. I then noticed that a hole had developed under the tailpipe, so that was it, the decision was final. Ordered a piece of stainless pipe 76mm diameter, which I will fit to a reducer, giving a slightly more purposeful look, & hopefully an evil growl

Part of the nice noise from mine comes from the length of pipe behind the silencer (which is just the resonator now). sadly my camera seems unable to capture the real noise.
