replacing sealed beam units

Good morning everyone . I am looking to replace my sealed beam units, (inners) I have bought new ones including bulbs, thinking they were just a straight swap, but I have read recently that a relay should be incorporated to enable the use of Halogen bulbs, and that there may be a problem with original fuses?? I have the car going in tomorrow, (monday 23rd) for tuning and brake works, and was hoping to get the lights sorted at the same time, but I need to know if there are likely problems !! Anyone got some advice ??

Normally you want to use a relay plus a new in line fuse. Otherwise the extra draw of the halogen units can over heat the existing wiring plus burn out the switches.

If the sealed beam inners are 75W and you're replacing them with 55W Halogens then the load on the fuse will be less. Having said that, if the fuse holders are in good condition they will be OK However it would be a good idea to have the lights supplied from relays because the fuse box can't be trusted 100%.

Many thanks for the info!, any idea on the size of the in line fuse??, What about the possibility of using L.E.Ds instead of Halogen? would the draw still require the relay and fuse?

Many thanks for you info!, I have had a reply from "sdibbers", and between both replies, I will have to speak to the guy doing the work for me and inform him of the possible problems ! I have heard of people changing the fuse box for a "Spade" type!, do you think this might be advantageous for the future??

Yes, change to blade type fuses it will be future proofing to a degree. The glass fuses come in two lengths, the shorter ones are more common but the longer ones are what's needed. The fuse box problem is partly the fuse and partly the material and construction of the fusebox.
