Reserve Tap!

Hi,

I'm new to the forum but having been checking it out for a week or so now since I bought my P6. It's a 1974 V8 model in brown with sunroof and orange cloth interior. It had been laid up for 10 years up until last year when it was MOT'd by the previous owner and covered 26 miles since!

I'm in the process of sorting it out (new water pump was the first job) but now I'm trying to fix the leaky fuel tap. I started on it last night but couldn't quite see how it (the brass body) was attatched to the metal bracket - is it just a case of prying it off, i.e. is it pushed in? Any help much appreciated! Tom.

It's held on by a nut. Be prepared to get petrol everwhere unless you can get the front of the car jacked up nice and high. It is possible to replace the "O" ring which is normally the cause of the problem, without removing the tap itself, but it is more fiddly than doing it on the bench. Once the pipes are disconnected from the tap, if you look at the pipe stub that goes through the bracket you'll see the nut.

I need to do mine

Can I take the centre piece out with the wire connected as it looks difficult to thread the wire back through in situ ?

You should be able to, the cable will just restrict the movement, but you could undo the clip that holds the outer cable if you need to.

It doesn't matter if it has a captive nut or not, because, IIRC you only slacken it enough to slide the outer cable back and then slide the inner cable to the side.

there is an earlier posting that i used when I did mine which I did in situ - make sure you have the correct o ring that can deal with fuel - then ensure you don't force the insert fully home before you put the little retaining screw back in - it goes gently into the groove in the insert before nipping up fully - otherwise you can strip the brass threads. It is a classic job for the head torch - it was an ok job provided you could see what you were doing :)
