rocker cover gasket sealant

The cork gasket on my 2000sc has cracked and is leaking oil. I have a new rubber gasket and would like to know what sealant to use with the rubber gasket so that I don't have oil leaks.

I recently installed the rubber gasket with no additional sealant. Have now driven over 1500 miles with no leaks. Just get both surfaces very clean and make sure gasket stays centered when tightening down.

I fitted one of those rubber gaskets didn't use sealant and no leaks. Problem is I can't get the cam cover off now! It Will not budge. Tried removing the three nuts and the filler cap then hammering in the filler hole with a piece of wood but no cigar. Not looking forward to the day when i really really to remove it.

Since i removed the sump on my car I have given up using the thick silicone sealants on the engine. There was loads of it in there. The problem is when you use it in place of a gasket as you tighten the two surfaces it gets squeezed out. It breaks off on the inner face and ends up in the sump blocking the oil pickup pipe.

At first I was sceptical but i am definately a wellseal convert!

You were supposed to glue the original cork gasket down. Then they introduced the cork gasket with the aluminum core, and you weren't supposed to glue it on. I tried a rubber one years ago without glue and it squeezed out, so ever since I always glued the rubber gasket to the cam cover using (this side of the pond) 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive. Your results may differ, but if you do decide to glue it on that's the glue to use. Regular weather-strip adhesive isn't oil durable enough, and I mistrust RTV silicone for oil sealing. That said…

More recently, a fellow on e-bay is selling silicone gaskets for all manner of cars, these are a narrow square-section gasket cast in red silicone and come wadded up in a ball!

This one you glue to the cam cover using RTV silicone, and so far I've been very happy with it. A bonus is because it is so narrow, the cam cover is much easier to remove when the gasket doesn't foul the cam carrier.

Yours
