Rope seal

Gents and ladies, I am very lucky as my rear crankshaft oil seal doesnt leak, and I gather this is rare!

if it were ever to leak does anyone know if somone is doing a kit to allow neoprene or other modern seals to be fitted to the pre 76 type rover v8's?

Does the crank have to come out with either the rope or if available the later rubber seal?

I just though I would ask now rather than trying to figure it out when its too late!

The block has to be machined to fit a lipseal to a ropeseal engine. Later P6B's had a lipseal, so that may be why your one isn't leaking. To do the seal the crank doesn't have to be removed, but it has to be dropped down a bit, and with a lipseal the gearbox, converter and driveplate need to be removed as well.

its a landrover suffix b engine so I think that puts it at 73 or 74.

so with the lipseal you speak of it has a rope seal and another rubber seal behind? sorry I know nothing about these seals.

the rope seals arnt available apparently, are the lip seals?

so if its a lip seal its gearbox and clutch etc off as well as the crank dropping down on instead?

many thanks

I can't tell you about the Land Rover engine, but by 73/74 P6B's had the lipseal. P6B "B" suffix engines had them, so maybe Land Rover ones did too.

There is either a rope seal, or a lipseal, but not both on the same engine. AFAIK rope seals are still available, if not specifically for Rovers there are plenty of other engines that used them, and the lipseals will definitely still be available as they have been used from then until the engine went out of production. Lipseals need the gearbox/clutch/flywheel to come off, the sump and rear main cap to be removed, and all the other mains caps to be slackened. You'll probably find the big end and main bearing shells are worn when you get to see them as well.

Ahh , so the fact I have a suffix b engine (genuine LR warranty replacement) rather than a suffix A has really done me a favour then

I am guessing like you said that as mine is bone dry it must have a lip seal which are still readlily available. happy days

although to be honest it sounds like more work to do the lip seal than a rope one if it ever does need it.

lets hope it stays dry!

re the wear I am pretty sure its only got a couple of K on it, its so clean inside I have never seen one like it, the drain taps open with your fingers and the rover v8 specialist said it was the quietest rover v8 he has ever heard-lets hope its gotplenty of miles left in it
