Hi,

Please could someone be of assitstance.

When driving through Durham City yesterday, there was a sound like something blowing in the engine compartment. The engine then cut out but i managed to restart it and drive a few miles. It then stalled again, i restarted and drove a few miles (with the ignition light on) but stopping again. The car would not then start again and one of the headlights has gone off.

I called out the AA and the guy inspected the car and suggested that there was a very poor quality spark in the distributer. He advised a new coil, condenser & points, which I have bought. Would anyone know the likely cause of this problem or suggest what the "popping sound" could have been ?

Cheers.

Pop suggests a misfire if the spark was weak then this could be the case i.e there is unburnt fuel getting to the exhaust.

However the battery light is interesting. This tells you that the car is not charging.

Now about 2 weeks ago I was out in my Vitesse when something similar happened to me. The car lost power began to struggle and misfire. I thought it may have been low fuel so pulled into the garage and filled up. Got back in the car and there was not enough battery to turn the engine. I got a jump start but the loss of power and misfire returned. I had no battery lamp but the dash was quite dim. I gave the accelerator a poke and the lights got brighter. Diagnosis was that the alternator was not charging. In my case the small wire had broken off so the car would only charge at high RPM.

I would fully charge the battery and run the car. If you have a multi meter check the voltage increase when running. It may be a battery or alternator fault. There are many motor factors who will test t for free so you could always take it out and take it along.

I would leave the points and bits until you have check the charging system.
