Sealant for rear window...

Hi all,

having recently done some paintwork to my P6, I need to re-fit the panels behind the rear door windows (between rear wings and roof).

Previously, they were sealed to the rear screen seal with some form of sealant - I'm guessing this might not be standard?

Either way, can anyone recommend some form of suitable sealant I can use (sparingly) to ensure a watertight seal? :)

Cheers,
Jim.

Hi Jim,

When I did Occie's I used Dum Dum, which I've used in the past and always favoured.

It stays pliable for quite a long time while you work it, and doesn't stick to your hands or tools. Great stuff! :)

I know Woolies and Frost's do it, but you can usually find it on a good factor's shelf.

Cheers,

Not sure I follow this enquiry and the responses.

The rear screen seal does not directly abut the rear quarter panels. The screen seal sits against a stainless steel strip which clips to the base unit (and has some sealer underneath). The stainless steel strip then abuts the quarter panels. I can't see a need for a waterproof seal between the stainless steel strip and the plastic/vinyl-covered quarter panel.

I have recently changed the rear screen seal of my P6 and refitted the stainless steel strip at the same time. The quarter panels (in original plastic material) had been sealed to the stainless steel strip. Made a complete mess of the fragile plastic material moving them - the hardened dum/dum or whatever they used had pulled bits of the very fragile quarter panel covering plastic off. Result - I had to get both quarter panels recovered in vinyl.

If there is no good reason for sealing the quarter panels then I suggest you don't. I personally see no reason for sealing.

No sealing is necessary for the rear external quarter panels (the ones usually covered in vinyl with a small Rover badge). There is a metal skin behind them which prevents water entering the car. Any water getting behind them drains directly down and out behind the rear wings/ mudguards.
