Seats wont lock!

Hi, Ive recently entered into the world of P6 ownership with a lovely mustard 3500S but its got one big niggle! the driver and passenger seats are tipped forward/back using a lever to the side of the seats but even when this is hard down the seats will still flop around! Ive no idea how the mechanism operates having been used to a rotary knob thing on the side of the seat, is this a common problem? anyone know how to fix it?
Cheers!

Hallo mate,
I hope this doesn`t cause you to break your seats, but I had a similar problem when I first made adjustments to mine. It turned out, after I`d got the seat back in the position I liked, that I just wasn`t pushing the locking/unlocking lever down hard, or far enough! They aren`t difficult to break, so I`ve heard, although mine didn`t, and I had to give a mighty shove downwards!

All the best, Drew

It's a friction lock so you need to preload it. At the moment you don't have sufficient movement on the lever to lock it, but if you go too far the lever will stick up too far when it's locked.
IIRC the whole adjustment procedure is in the book, and the seats are so easy to remove it's worth getting them out to have a look.

Hi, Im not sure its that - before i get in, to keep em upright for at least some of the journey, i reach in and put all my weight on the lever and force it down. surely it cant take more pressure than that??

You can strip down the mechanism and give one side's locking plate a semi turn so when you push the handle down , it grips tighter
Harder to explain than it is to do
I found this out when making a driver's seat out of a couple of passenger seats

something quick to try is a squirt of wd40. there is two stanless steel guards/finishers at the back just about the seat runners. they just un-screw/ you will see the slot on the seat base and a little bolt which is for the back rest. Give it a squirt and try again a few times.

I found this bit suffers from a sort of surface rust. once it is free just tilt it back and forth a few times. then you want to put a bit of proper grease on that bit. you shouldn't even need the seat out.

I have just done the very same thing to a friends car that I have been doing a few jobs on.

sorry just re-read the post.

I gave the solution for the opposite problem. but look under the same stainless trim the bolts may be loose. Worth trying before stripping the entire seat down.

Thanks for the tips guys - I can understand the principle behind the seats - from what you are saying I dont think its worth messing around and its going to be easier to get them out and see what I can do. ive offcuts of various materials - it may be worth lashing something up outside the car to test the various settings of the locks. trial and error is the way forward then! :)
