Series 1 Wipers

Hi folks and Happy New Year!

Hoping somebody can shed some light on an issue with my wiper motor.

By way of background, a few weeks ago the wiper motor started occasionally emitting a really loud screeching sound accompanied by slow/juddering wipers. Having resolved to take action, today I started by disconnecting the linkage to the wipers and trying the motor. The screech remained, so I then took out the motor (not as easy as the manual would have you believe!). Anyway, I took off the flat plate at one end of the unit and everything looked suitably greasy and intact. I then removed the commutator cover by undoing the two long bolts. The commutator did not spin particularly well so I cleaned the bearing / felt washer, put the cover back on, reconnected the battery and then reattached the supply to the motor (which is just sitting on the car body for now). Lo and behold the motor sprang into life with no screeching. The fast speed also works fine. Unfortunately when I turn the wiper switch to the off position the motor continues to operate. Is this anything to do with the motor just resting on the car body with no wipers attached or have I broken something? Any ideas greatly appreciated!

If you have not attached the park switch yet, yes it is normal that the motor will continue to operate. If you have it attached, probably the contacts are stuck closed.

The big wheel in the wiper has a cam on it that holds the contacts closed except in the park position. Normally this means the motor keeps running until the park position is reached regardless of the manual switch position. given your motor bearings were somewhat dry I'd suspect the follower for the cam and its switch points are possibly also stuck on (ie. dryed grease), or about to become so, so check it all out before reinstalling....

Hi, It will probably need the load of the wipers on the screen to work otherwise it can overshoot the park position before it can shut the power off.

If I recollect correctly, in the park position the motor is is disconnected and shorted so it stalls , so it parks correctly each time

I got a one wipe and park to work on my S1 2000 with a foot switch that bypassed the park switch to ground. This doesnt work on cars that park by applying 12v to BOTH sides of the motor - it just blows the fuse.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Anything to worry about with the big plastic wheel or does it just lift out and go back in? Have not reassembled the bits yet as my manual advises soaking the armature bearing in SAE 20 oil for 24 hours. Hopefully Castrol GTX will do the job! It also says to soak the “felt lubricator” in the gearbox - hoping this part will be obvious when I see it?

Managed to get everything back together today and the screeching is no longer occurring, so hopefully it was just a lubrication issue. Thanks again everyone for the input. BTW for anyone attempting this I have the link system which looks a lot simpler than the other types listed in the manual!
