Series 2 car, Mk1 stamping on inner wing

Good evening everyone, this first post is image heavy, but I hope it helps explain the "MK1" mistery.
All the images relate to the 3500s
The name files should be clear enough..
I presume that BM on the base number tag means "Base Manual" and BA means "Base Automatic"
The next post shows the 3500 auto images

And now for the 3500 auto images. Any ideas of where the 8:13 CR engine came from?

Just realised, according to Rudiger's database, my "485" engine number should be emissions controlled, but
I can't find anything different about it compared to the 3500 auto engine, no additional plumbing, canisters or other...very odd

If may well have HIF6 carbs though, which were not standard in the UK until the 1974 model year.

HIF6's were standard long before 1974, all 3500S had them, and I don't ever recall any autos on "K" plates not having them either.

I'll bow to your greater knowledge there Harvey, there seems to a period when they were fitted before it was actually official they were fitted.
Thanks
Nick

I think it's (P6)B Automatic or (P6)B Manual.

Four cylinder base unit start in 1963 as M 000001. Car number 100 has M 000142 from memory.

The last 2200's have base unit number well into the M 200000 range - CHA14T has M 214629, one of the highest known.

'BA' base units get to approx BA 025000 in Series One.

Your car appears to be exactly what it's supposed to be, with base units not older than the cars. The auto one dates from about April 1972 if I'm not mistaken. By 1976 we're in the range of BA 067000 and higher. 'BA' is a continual run of P6B auto base units from 1967 to 1976

Cheers
Nick

Unfortunately on my database I have recorded more chassis than engine numbers. Up to 1973 the chassis/engine number combinations mostly are 454/455 (1974on 454/451).

By the way: I wonder if the blue colour on the V8 Auto is a P6 colour......

Rudiger

The auto's build date is down as the 17th of May '72 on the factory record and the 3500s was first registered on the 18/12/72.
(I don't have a factory record the 3500s yet)
Apparently production of the 484 cars started in August '71. I wonder where it sat until the end of '72?
Being such an early 484 car, I presume it was made in August '71. Can anyone give me any more information as to when it was built?
Were sales of the lhd 3500s that slow?
The auto was originally Davos white but the last owner was a Policeman from Le Mans. I have the sneaky feeling that
the shade of blue the car is now is based on Gendarme blue and he had the car painted "at work"!
Happy P6ing to all.
Philippe

ps. Getting back to the original "MK1" question, we now know that French and Belgian series 2 cars were stamped MK1.
Were other European cars stamped MK1 as well?

It'd be a good bet the manual car was built in 1971. Maybe not as early as August though. I suspect it sat for a fair period prior to sale.

That works out pretty accurately with the base unit. We recently serviced a beautiful UK 3500 auto built 15th March 1972 with base unit BA 044493. It all checks out. Your auto was a complete new-build.

This doesn't explain the apparent manuals and RHD cars with '484' numbers. More digging needed!

Is there any stamped MK 2? I suspect it's something to do with type approval for export market?

May be ! in france , it is always difficult to obtain "v5" for import cars, impossible for tvr, marcos, ginetta, ultima ...

and in 1972, thèse difficulties were already a strategy to close the import of British cars . The importer has probably decided not to repeat the registration and has asked to keep the appelation mk1
