Side and Tail Lights

Hello,
My problem is that my tail and number plate lights have died, but the front side lights still work, as do the stop and hazard lights. If the side lights are on separate circuits, i.e. left and right, but both front lights work, does this give a clue as to where I should be looking?

As far as I remember the side, tail and number plate lights are all on the same circuit, I used to have my alarm wired to flash them (rather than the indicators), and I simply fed 12v to the tail light circuit (alarm was in the boot).

The problem may be the the loom that runs to the boot under the rear seat and throught the rear bulkhead.

Is the car fitted with a towbar? If so, the connections for the trailer socket can damage the wiring on the car where they are connected. ( for "damage" substitute "scotchlock")

Thanks Chaps, after 4 hours looking for Gremlins, here is an update. Some duff gen earlier, inasmuch as only the drivers sidelight worked and not both.
Soon found out why the lights were'nt working, the fuse had blown. But, whereas the book says 5 Amps, someone had fitted a 25 Amp fuse, so the problem has existed since before I acquired the car just over a year ago. Another but, even with the fuse removed, the drivers side front sidelight still works!
When I tried to use a 7 Amp fuse, the thing blew as soon as I switched to side lights. The wiring to the rear lights is OK, and although the fault is enough to blow a 25 Amp fuse over a period of time, the bulbs are still ok. At the moment I am running on Jury Rig consisting of a wire running from the battery to the number plate positive, clamped to the battery +ve terminal with a Mole grip when I need lights. This energises all the side and tail lights, including the nearside front sidelight, so there must be continuity (even with the fuse removed?). However this won't do for long as the MOT is due in less than two weeks!
Any ideas on where I should concentrate my search? By the way, my P6 is 1973 and has a multi- positiion fusebox fitted just above the glovebox.

If the fuses keep blowing it sounds like a short direct to earth. As for where to look, all I can suggest is look for chafed/frayed wiring and trace the circuit back thru until you find it. Good Luck!

I would disconnect all the bullet connectors. refit the correct amp fuse the one at a time reconnect the bullets till it blows a fuse.

Could also take out the bulbs as this may be easier. switch on the side lights with no bulbs or wires connected and if anything odd happens then the switch could be duff.

I would pay attention to the brake lights/switch. They are a higher wattage, I have seen them jam on so when you turn on the sides it is too much current.

I wouldn't by pass the switch or you may set your p6 on fire.
