Slipping in reverse

One for you H I think.
A friend of mine has a P6 auto with the 35 box & says the fluid looks very dark & also slips in reverse.
Is this fixable or terminal?. My Jag years ago had the same fault & I only had to adjust the rear band (external adjustment )& it cured it .
Thanks mark

They're all fixable, it just depends on how deep your pockets are.......

As a general rule if it slips in REVERSE, and also in TOP, (or has delayed engagement of TOP) but still has engine braking in "1" then it's the rear clutch, which is definitely gearbox out to fix, if TOP is fine, and there's no engine braking in "1" then it's the rear band, which could be the adjustment, or a servo fault, both of which are fixable in-situ, but if it's the band itslf, or the servo has been loose and damaged the casing, then that's a box out job too.

Proper job
Thanks H I will let him know.
Another member of the club paid £1800 last year for a recon box after having the same fault apparently.
Seems a bit steep to me but maybe being in the trade I don't see the retail that often.

Personally I'd say that was a bit steep, even for remove/overhaul/refit at retail prices. Where are those people that pay that kinda money when i'm pricing them up...... I suppose £300 of that £1800 could be VAT, but that's still £1500, and even with a few unforseen items like snapped manifold studs it still seems a lot of dosh for what in most instances is just a hobby car.

Thing is Mr H if you price things up honestly, you will never meet these people who are prepared to pay over the odds.

Yes I agree. I had a customer come to me a year or so back with a Mercedes 230 (a friend of my fathers actually), he was used to going to the local dealer but asked me for a price to service it. I gave him a sensible quote which was a reasonable profit , he replied "no you must be wrong that is too cheap you can't service it properly for that". So I said I will check. An hour later I rang him back & added £100 to quote, he said " that's more like it when can I book it in"!!

Money was not an issue for the gearbox chap either & I think they knew it when they quoted.
