slow it down

hi there ,could someone shed some light on why my indicators flash "flat out". as far as i know my earth connections are good, both indicators (left and right) flash at the same rate (bloody fast). as the revs gets higher they flash faster, but are still fast at,say, idle. new flasher unit? am i correct in the flasher being behind the speedo/dash instruments? thanks again

Karl, if it is an origional flasher unit you may find that the speed is bulb wattage dependant and that the bulbs are the wrong value for the flasher, just a thought.

Hi Karl, your voltage regulator could be faulty if the speed of flash increases with engine speed. Check the voltage across the battery after it's warmed up and it shouldn't go above 14v even with all the electrics switched on.

The flasher unit is usually in the knee bin near the bonnet release handle.

Indicators will go like the clappers if you have changed to the new boy racer LED bulbs

Hello Karl,

I would go with your initial thought and suggest that the flasher unit is the problem. Each time over the past 25 years when the frequency of my flashers increased, the unit was the problem. If you open the driver's glove box, you will see it in a bracket on the right. Originally it was a rectangular tin made by Lucas, but if it has been replaced at some point by another brand, it may be just sitting somewhere in there. Basically it consists of a relay and a capacitor, and when the latter starts to break down the frequency of the flash increases.

So I would start by replacing it, and if all is like mine then the problem will be solved..

Ron.
