small dodgyness - diff extension seals.

So Ron and a few others recommended changing the diff housing extension seal before stuffing it all back together. Rather than try and do it when the diff was back in the car (ie and use the rest of the driveline to stop the driveline from rotating as you undo the bolt holding the flange on), I used an impact driver and it came off easily.

BUT

I think I have found another fine example of ham fisted "specialists" once again passion fingering the poor car.

So bolt undone and flange removed:

What's this stringy stuff? Shit. It's silicone. And it's everywhere.

The more I looked, the more I found:

Where I think the seal sits (Ron? Help!) it was full of silicone.

About an hour later:

I always thought the mating face of the tailshaft flange had a grease coating. Uh.... no.

Finally free of Silicone.

BUT. That washer and small O ring isn't factory by the look of it? Do I just use a normal Flat washer? Is that area where I dug the Silicone out of suppose to have the seal sitting in there and sitting so the grove faces towards the back of the car?

Re: Have I found a massive example of dodgyness - diff extension

Hi Geoff,

All that silicon, what a mess! The oil seal can be seen in your third photo from the end. Just prise it out and after priming as we talked about previously, tap the new one into place. The flat face is on the outside, the open side with the fine coil spring goes to the inside.

Mine has no '0' ring, just a flat washer from memory, so just use that.

All the best,
Ron.

That is the correct orientation. Did the old one come out easy enough?

There wasn't one in there! It was missing completely and they had put a skim of silicon around what I'm guessing is the top of the bearing? (says GACO or something and PATIENTED on the metal face so I'm guessing its a bearing).

So shoddy....! I'm also annoyed as I got the brakes checked out by a place here in Melbourne years ago when I first got it running, they changed the fluid and one vacuum hose and said "no worries!". Going by how sludged up the rear calipers were I don't think they even bothered to put the car on a hoist.

Re: Have I found a massive example of dodgyness - diff extension

Cheers Harvey, I was looking at the old manual I have which is for earlier cars.

Re: Have I found a massive example of dodgyness - diff extension

So I have a new oil seal in the diff extension, I put a new O ring in as well, have tightened it all up, filled it with about a litre of diff oil and on a flat and level floor, it is now leaking out past the tailshaft flange. Any ideas on how to stop it leaking?

I haven't overfilled the diff, that was the first thing I checked. I'd rather not put the diff in until I fix this, as this is what caused the diff rubber mount to fall apart.

i'm watching to see the answer with interest.

Are you meant to pre-soak the seals?

I don't think so, I used a rubber seal grease to fit the seal and I used the same grease again with the new little o ring.

maybe I should put a skim of silicone around the new oil seal :?

Re: Have I found a massive example of dodgyness - diff extension

Hi Geoff,

As I indicated in my post above, the oil seal can be seen in your photo. Whoever bodged it, just filled the cavity with silastic leaving the oil seal in place. You have now installed a new oil seal over the top of the exisiting one, so the latter is now not forming an appropriate seal with the drive flange, hence it is leaking.

I found a couple of my oil seals as a reference, a photo of which follows.

The seal on the left is a NOS item, and like the one in your pinion extension shaft, features GACO and Patented across the metal face. The item on the right is a new replacement, which is the same as your new one.

You will need to remove both of them, and then possibly fit another new oil seal as the new one that you have in there at present will quite likely suffer a misadventure when you endeavour to prise it out.

All the best,
Ron.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ha!

Gotcha. I thought you were having a "moment" Ron and I was thinking "but there's no seal in there, what's he talking about?", I thought the top of the old seal was the metal top piece doodad thingy of the bearing.

The new seal seemed to fit in perfectly in that space too!

Back to the garage!

ps I am an idiot.

You're not an idiot Geoff, it is all a learning process. :)

I have heard a saying with reference to Rovers,..ohhhh do it twice, and whatever time you estimate for a job, double it
