solenoid 4cyl

Hi Guys,

I am looking to try and figure out why I have no voltage for ignition coil at my coil.

On the 2200tc there is a white/yellow wire which goes to the ignition coil from the solenoid. With the ignition on there is no voltage on connector on the back of the solenoid.

In order to run the engine I need to feed the yellow/white wire from live supply, The engine runs but I need to disconnect the battery or the wire for it to stop.

Is it a case of changing the solenoid?

You shouldn't have a supply from the starter with the ignition on, only when the starter is cranking. You've lost the ballasted supply which should be there with the ignition on, which takes over when the starter is released. Check the ignition control fuse, then trace back throufh the supply to see where it gets lost. Check the ballast resistor.

Thanks Harvey,

That makes sense, I couldn't work out how a switched live would be at the starter.

What I do know is that the fuse is fine because the oil pressure and brake warning lights work.

I can see the Ballast resistor on the wiring diagram but have no idea where it could be. Does anyone know where the ballast resistor is on a 2200tc?

If it's the same as my V8, it is inside the wiring loom.

Find where it comes from and see if you have any voltage there. It should be at the back of the fuse box but depends on the year of your car.

If you do have voltage, then it could be that the ballast resistor has failed.

You will need either to find it, or run another live from the fuse box (or whatever) and use a separate ballast resistor.

Got is sorted.

I stripped the dash board out and traced the wiring out.

Basically I have a resistor wire running from the loom behind the clocks to the engine bay where the wire comes out to for the distributor.

I have taken a few photos to show but is does tie in with the wiring diagram. From the fuse there is two white wires, one goes to the ignition switch and the other goes to the instruments. just before there is a little cluster of white wire which go off to the a joint where it meets the white/pink resistor wire. The goes all the way to the engine bay where it is joined to the other white yellow which goes to the coil.

The problem I had was that at some point someone had tampered with the connection in the engine bay and it hadn't been done well so this is where I lost the connection.

Easy when you know where to look.
